true but by definition the song structure of most trance played in clubs is a lot more "pop" than house. most of the house music played in clubs is a lot less melodic than pop and feature a lot less easily memorable elements.
The reason why you don't know what the heck you're talking about could be directly - but perhaps not exclusively - related to the ludicrous idea you've somehow developed that, being "melodic" or "non-melodic" is a barometer for determining what is pop and what isn't.
It's also apparent that you've conveniently forgotten about the myriad of uber-commercial acts like "September" or songs like "Sharam - My girl wants to party all the time", which are also considered "house".
Bottom line: house is far more popular (hence, POP) than trance will ever be. So next time, try to think before you use the cheese-tainted trance to represent the entire style in a negative light.
Every style of music suffers from getting adulterated and diluted with drivel.

I kind a agree. Understanding and enjoying todays cheese trance is easy.
But understanding real magical and deep trance music, like trance was years ago...is something that not many people can. That's why people today say old trance is boring.

It's just very unfortunate that blanket statements like "trance is pop" are made without making it clear that what is being referred to as "trance" is not bonafide "trance" at all.
You don't make generalizations like "music is junk" simply because most music junk.
And if someone does make a statement like "trance sucks", I'm going to treat them like the idiot they're coming off to be.

Most people seem to get it without it being explained every single time though.

But the newcomers dont know that, and all they see are a bunch of bitter people [ironically] making fun of a style of music in a place that is ostensibly for discussing it.

Sorry Trance-heads, or House-heads, or [any-other-EDM-genre]-heads, but there's going to be releases that are labelled as these genres that are marketed to the masses. Every genre has had its moment to "shine" in the Pop spotlight. Every club "classic" from yesteryear has been re-done for mass-consumption, with cheesy vocals added on or some supersaw added. Even Techno classics like "Strings Of Life" have been pop-ized:
Whoever said "The guitar just fucks it all" is right
On the other hand, the Pop exterior of a genre isn't the best representation of what the genre has to offer. Hence chadi's comment

chadi: The other posters do have a point when they say that Tiesto and the like are much more popular than most of the top House DJs, etc combined. I have yet to see any Derrick May or Dimitri From Paris "blogs" with glitter crap graphics and bad-HTML ( ), but there are tons of profiles with nothing but pictures of AVB, PVD, etc.
I know in NC when I bump into an "raver", he/she usually says something like "I used to go to all of the massives back in the day! My favorite DJ is [Oakenfold, DJ Icey, Tiesto, PVD, DJ Irene, some Breaks DJ]. I remember when he/she was here every 6 months, the E was better, etc."
People with a basic knowledge of EDM know who Tiesto and Paul Oakenfold are, yet new artists like Eric Prydz or Deadmau5 don't ring a bell to any of them. Even the names for the cheesy commercial House music, like Bob Sinclair and Sharam, are foreign to them.
Why is this? If House is so popular all around the world, then why is it alien to us Americans? IMO the big labels who host Tiesto and the other big-name Trance DJs have done a great job of marketing these DJs as "brand names". The big-names have logos, shelf displays filled with their music, featured coverage on the mainstream music portals (I'm thinking Yahoo/iTunes/MSN here), and professionally-done higher-budget-than-most-EDM music videos. The bottom line is that these DJs have marketing campaigns where a LOT of money is poured into making sure that their "brands" are recognized by the public. The public is forced to be exposed to these campaigns, therefore the public recognizes who Tiesto is. The fact that the public associates all of Trance music with these few brands is a travesty to the genre, but it has been made possible because of the big marketing employed by these artists' marketing teams.
Think about it: Does Dimitri From Paris have a logo? Was there a section of the Sunday Best Buy flyer that showed the Trentemoller album available for sale? Was the new Boards Of Canada single on the big-retailers' promo CDs (that are played in the stores)? Which CDs are on the front section of the Dance CD section of a retailer? Which CDs are sitting there getting the most "face time" with potential buyers, while the new Louie Vega mix is tucked away on a shelf somewhere? Which Dance videos are on rotation on MTV2, or on the MTV website? It all adds up to maximum exposure for the big Trance DJs, while the rest of the EDM heavy-weights become obscure to the non-EDM fan.
You guys aren't going to change anything (if you want it to change) by sitting here and posting about it. Go out there are meet the Tiesto fans at the local Target. Talk to them about this artist that they should check out, or that new track that you've been playing for the last 6 months. Let them know that there is more to EDM than what's staring at them in the Dance section, that all of their CDs don't have to have scatily-clad chicks on their covers, or big brand-name logos plastered all over the thing. EDUCATE the people, so that they can make their own, not some marketing firm's, decision about what music to like.

Strange, here in Bulgaria there are 2 EDM scenes. The house one (which is A LOT more pop than in other countries, here there are maybe 2-3 clubs, maybe more I don't know since I am not a fan, that play good not pop house). The other is a lot more psy/goa orientated and thank god, far from those new house fans who know shit about edm anyway.
Trance ( Anthem-like tracks) here is considered gay or for freaks.

Since when does saying "this place is for discussing trance" equate "this place is only for discussing trance"? Try to get my point next time before rushing to pettiness.

Dojomaster26,
First off, nice writeup and effort on your part for explaining your point of view.
Nevertheless, there are some things you don't have correct...

The main problem is in your assumption that names like "tiesto" and "paul oakenfold" are going to be invariably associated by the public with the style "trance", when in fact, that is not the case at all. If you look at what what Tiesto and Paul Oakenfold have been spinning lately, a great deal of it is not actually "trance" anymore (not that much of it ever was, but you know what I mean). In fact, trance is probably the least popular of all the commercialized styles in EDM, despite the falsehoods blindly perpetuated by a few members of this board.
Almost every club that isn't playing hiphop is playing, guess what, HOUSE MUSIC. Randomly pick a sample of a dozen people and ask them if they know what "house music" is and you were certainly get the majority to give you the affirmative, but ask that same crowd if they've ever heard of "trance music" and you'd be surprised how few actually have -- if any.
Truth is, you can't even hear trance at a club in America unless you go specifically to one that is either dedicated to playing it or one that has a special "trance event".
House is everywhere...it is the STAPLE club music. Trance may be more well-known in europe, but the mass majority of people in America have never even heard of the name. And if you "show" them what it is, words like "techno" or "dance" or "house" will pop up in their minds.

I've yet to see similar idiotic madness going on about a house/techno/whatever dj. Trance really has embraced pop more easier than any other EDM genre.
You're so wrong, it's not even funny.

Not that it should really require any explanation for those who live in America, but have you ever heard of Benny Benassi?
