Absolutely correct. Once again, Tech/Minimal house and its puzzling and sudden popularity is to blame. Tech/Minimal house are the exact examples of music slowing down and trying to sound intelligent, all the cool kids listen to it, fuck all the trance crackers. I've spent two years trying to figure out why exactly Sasha and Digweed have been spinning such boring sets. Someone bring back the days of Progressive/Epic House.

Wide Open Space is definitely a highlight for me. Another is on the first disc during the Sin City breakdown when it starts to pick back up and the crowd goes nuts. Gives me chills every time I hear it.

I feel exactly the same. I've taken MIDI classes and have learned to use Logic Studio and Reason, i'm saving up every penny to buy everything I need to produce and I'm hoping to make some real quality 90's style trance and prog.

You rule! I can't remember the last time I heard the term melodic trance. When I started there was pretty much either trance (more straight forward and fast with blazing 303 type style) or melodic trance. Then melodic trance became 'Progressive Trance' and 'Progressive House' and all the other sub and sub sub genres.

This is a great thread and there's too much to try to comment to. One thing is Oaky really got me into what I considered to be the best types of Trance. GU Oslo and NY were the main CD's. I saw him once in LA and his live set blew my mind. It was impossible not to dance. Then all the sudden he started coming out with these CD's that seemed like he was trying too hard or trying to cater to the mainstream. It was a total let down and since then I have a slight cringe when I hear his name mentioned. But then recently I discovered His Creamfields CD form 2004. Not his best but WAY much more the Oakie I remember. I'm enjoying that a lot in my car right now. The tracks on there are so much more like that late 90's sound. Never heard this Shanghai mix I am definitely downloading tonight.

Last thing a word on producing. I've been using Reason since it's release (all though I neglect it greatly) and IMHO it's the best under $500 solution for having all you need to write great tracks. Much better quality, much more versatile and easier to use IMO than Fruity Loops. Fruity loops tracks have never sounded like anything that would actually be released to me. So take that as you will but if you've never tried Reason give the demo a download. V 4.0 just came out this year and they have added the sickest synth ever in the new version. THOR! You can just tweak aruond on the knobs with an arpegiator with that thing for hours.

anyway yeah...whew...what a great thread.
