If it is already IN the rules, then why all the fuss to make a NEW rule based on avery's actions?
Edit: besides, the rules are more clearly defined now such that this statement was drawn up based on avery's actions:
"An unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty will be interpreted and applied, effective immediately, to a situation when an offensive player positions himself facing the opposition goaltender and engages in actions such as waving his arms or stick in front of the goaltender's face, for the purpose of improperly interfering with and/or distracting the goaltender as opposed to positioning himself to try to make a play,"
This action was not specifically in the rule book, and even if avery was being an ASS if you listen to many professional opinions (its all over the media)...avery technically did not break any rules, because the specific action is not in writing. now, if you feel like the ref could have INTERPRETED the original rules to align with avery's action, thats on the ref to make the call. But according to the professionals, avery was simply being an asshole, and nothing further. (until today, in which the specific action can no longer take place without penalty.) |
he didn't break a rule that provided a penalty to the team. He did break a rule that would give him a 10 min. misconduct penalty. The 10 min. penalty wouldn't put the team down a man. The new interpretation of the rules would now put the team down a man.
