How can a view of a dying, twitching man could be funny? |
Because when you deal with death and trauma and seeing teh innocent suffering on such a regular basis you have to crack fucked up jokes like that or you'll go crazy. I already can't fucking sleep without Ambien some nights as it is. I'm a Paramedic as well, and we have our own twisted humor in that field as well. No one likes having to kill someone, or having your best friend get shot in the head rigth next to you, or having someone die after 15 minuts of CPR and countless attempts to resucitate. Its hard to explain but surely there are some firefighters or EMTs or cops that browse this forum who can understand. If you don't look for some escape from the shocking reality of constant death, it'll eat you away inside. Believe me I am HAUNTED by images seared into my brain from my numerous deployments and years workign in EMS, and there are days I really wonder why the fuck I even try any more. Certian smells or sounds can throw me into vivid flashbacks... but its that fucked up humor that keeps me and my mates going. If you can't look past it you are innefective at the job, and an effective way to deal with the constant stress is to use humor. I think thats a lot healthier than using drugs or beating up on your wife, which some of my brothers in arms have sadly resorted to.
And on top of that, THE ****** I SHOT WAS TRYING TO KILL ME, and he severely wounded my mate. So yeah its funny because he got what he had coming. At least he died quickly.
