I think ultimately they both know what needs to happen, but both are in love with the other and are having a hard time dealing with the reality of it.

Being in love does not make two people compatible.

People grow and change over time, and it is possible for two people to have been together and in love for over 6 years, only to have their lives go in different directions, resulting in them breaking up for no other reason than that they are no longer right for eachother.
