True, Armin vs Sasha isn't really a fair comparison as the latter is simply far more talented and can afford to get by on talent alone.

I just find it upsetting more than anything; I'm less inclined to see the 'big' trance DJs these days, despite them having been my idols in the past, purely because I don't wanna know how shit they've become.

Yes but have you actually seen Tiesto recently or did you conveniently miss all of the discussion about just how good of a party he still puts on and how the chances are extremely high that you will have a great time, regardless of what music you listen to now? That's the difference with Armin, and I believe Sasha has changed a lot too over the years, at least from what I've heard about him. Armin disappoints me a lot these days DJ wise that I even skipped the Armin Only concert. I've never seen Sasha live but a lot of people have also started to skip seeing him due to the fact that he simply isn't the same as he was before and can be disappointing to fans. You rarely see this with Tiesto.
Sure, we can look at it from another angle with the productions and I'm not disagreeing with you there, but when looking at it from a purely DJing perspective, he still delivers the goods. His track selection is still top notch and people seem to love his shows with good reason.
EDIT - I should get a chance to see Sasha sometime this year so I'll be keen to finally check him out

No, to be fair I haven't seen him recently. Saw him twice in 2006, but not since then.

There are quite a lot of things that put me off seeing him though:

1. The people. I've noticed amongst his growing fanbase of the last few years that a lot of his fans seem to be absolute idiots. I guess you could say it's the same reason I don't go to watch Man United games at the pub anymore. I'm a Man U fan (originally from Manchester, but went to uni in Birmingham) and when I'm in a Birmingham pub for a game it's chock full of stupid glory supporters from Kensington who don't have a fucking clue about football. Really takes the enjoyment out of the experience. It's embarrassing. Even if I like the music he's playing, I also like the company of an informed audience and I don't think you get that with Tiesto.

2. His music. Come on, he's making some shit tunes now, remixes of Britney and Justin Timberlake. I know producing and DJing are separate fields, but does he honestly not play those tunes out? I bet he does.

3. His attitude. Tiesto seems to want everything to be really big and grandiose. Huge stages, elaborate production and lighting, vast amounts of people and his face plastered everywhere. I remember someone saying they'd bought a ticket for his gig at the O2 arena and there was a seat number on it. What the fuck, it's a dance event. People need to realise that less is more, particularly when it comes to going to raves. Sure, trance suits a big stage but there should be a limit. Tiesto, and some of the other top trance DJs, have violated that limit many times with concerts and fucking Disneyland. It's not what raving is about; in fact, it's the complete opposite. It's meant to be select and intimate, not glaring and obnoxious.

I'll probably see him again at a festival or something over the next few years; all I'm saying is that I don't have much of a desire to see him anymore BASED on those three factors mentioned above. Seems pretty reasonable to me, really.

Yea that's fair enough, each to their own I guess. I personally enjoy really massive events and at other times like a more intimate and smaller venue.
Sadly a lot of those problems arise when something/someone becomes popular but hey, you gotta deal with it one way or another.

Put yourself in Tiesto's shoes. You are on the leading front of electronic dance music and you WOULDN'T throw rockstar-type shows in huge venues and elaborate production? The guy is living the dream. He's also a whore for money, but really now, who isn't?

As for the idiot audience, hell, we all have to start somewhere. Seriously, for anyone that doesn't know jack shit about trance music Tiesto is VERY noob-friendly. His music flat-out makes a LOT of people want to dance, which is probably the most important aspect of being a superstar DJ. Make them want to dance, and they will come to your shows.

Even his name is easy to remember and gives him an image. The guy has just done it right.

We used to have these things here called RAVES, and those were usually the entrance point for most folks into the scene. 1 night, 12 hours of dancing, 25-50 DJs...insanity.

We don't have much of that anymore here, everything has moved into clubs. Rave scene in Texas-USA is about dead as dirt right now.

(p.s. I do know everybody already knows about raves and massive, I was just trying to make a point. LOL...I'm not that stupid)

definitely - id never consider it. That whole concert format - I mean wtf. In 2002 id never even contemplated the idea of tiesto doing that shit.. same with armin when you look at his remixes of the likes of iio 'rapture' I mean awesome trance. How people are still listening to recent stuff I have no idea. I do still play trance daily but normally nothing beyond late 03. Also I have recently had the misfortunes of looking through sky plus and discovering that there is a channel called clubland uk... the state of the representation of dance 'trance music' for the masses is absolutely soul destroying. A disgrace.. e.g scooter.. and the rest of that hard jumpstyle shit. I think chicane are one of the very few that have kind of done well.. with the likes of 'dont give up' - 'offshore' - 'no ordinary' 'saltwater' morning.. choons. And of course when rui da silva 'touch me' and modjo 'lady' oh and even ' stardust ' music sounds better with you' they all went to number 1 but these are hardly trance tracks.
