Not really. The big three cut a few corners, like not including a system speaker, but these days it actually tends to be more expensive to build than buy. It may be less expensive in a few cases, but certainly not half the price!

The only reason to build today is if you need a specialized rig (games, production, media center, whatever) or if you want better control over the parts for some other reason (like keeping the noise level down).

There's the hassle of uninstalling all the shovelware on consumer PCs, or just reformatting, but even at work I don't make $400 an hour, let alone on my personal time, so I think it's worth the minor effort.

Yeah, basically. Check that all the hardware is fully supported by the OS you want to install, check that all your power requirements are met, and as you're putting it together, do the obvious, and make sure every component passes the good visual check, that it is seated properly and firmly. Before you start an OS install, go into your BIOS and ensure that all the components that should be listed there, are.

Really hard to tell from what you're posting, but it does indicate either a botched build and/or install.

Yes, exactly, specialized systems. So, a system with the specs he listed in the first post would cost more from a vendor, than just buying the parts himself. Nevermind the prices for high-end gaming rigs.

Mid-grade machines meant for the typical user, yeah, I'll agree with you, building it yourself is hardly worth it...to most

So, love_child, what'd you do, return everything else?

My sis wants one of those new 13" MacBooks with the new NVIDIA graphics card, $1,399. I bought my other sis a white MacBook last boxing day on a rare inventory clear-out of previous year's model, with a $300 discount at $1,099 at that time.

Apparently, the Yorkdale mgr told me yesterday that there may be a one-day only sale at that location next Friday only. Whole story behind why there was a discount on Dec. 26/07, i can get into it if anyone wants to hear.

I would rather use my Sony points and get her a VAIO laptop for free. I have always been against Sony computing because I felt it was the MAC version of PCs, with over-glitzed products that are just a waste of money. But these are girls we are talking about (my sis) and I'd rather get it for free, lol, than spend anything this xmas (more $$$ for the M LMAO). But she's leaning on the MacBook, anyway...I thought I'd share my research, in case anyone has anything to add:

When I first put my current system together I paid about $1200 for the quad core extreme alone since it was just new on the market. Between the water cooler, MOBO, ETC, I almost dropped 3 grand on it. Now I've got a new TB hard drive bringing total capacity of storage to about 1.6 TB
