Yeah - I don't know. I guess I just don't want to - I don't get a lot of pleasure out of producing music, and even less out of producing stuff I'd really ever play (if I do anything I like to work on downtempo and/or ambient stuff).

So basically I think the industry is racist against the race of people who aren't inclined to produce. Kind of like how 60% of all people who drown in America are African American.

interesting arguments in here. i think in the big picture producers are adding something tangible back into the scene/music. Genre's die when new people stop trying to produce it.

however just because you don't write doesn't mean you can't add just as much back. i know for a fact there are a few djs in boston(ali ajami?) that never produced until much later and were so important to the scene. they did 1 or 2 shows a week but the consistency of music and atmosphere was adding just as much to scene as a production.

plus producers need DJ's who don't produce and DJ's need producers who can't promote correctly. i think they are a great compliment to each other.

This is, I think, a great point to be made. Do you think this dichotomy is still as prevalent as it used to be, or that it kind of begins to die with the trend of the producer/dj?

I guess that was one thing I always found neat back in the day - producers who clearly worked very closely with certain DJ's, and it sounded like they basically both influenced each other. Very cool kind of relationship.

I dunno why you surmised that my idea of good gigs = banging out tunes in front of large swarms of people or even large gigs in clubs.

My idea of a good gig is just being able to play what I want or feel like to people who want or are willing to hear it in any interesting environment with good sound.

I would really like to be able to get paid to travel and play in exotic locations.

I actually much prefer smaller gigs.
