Just calculate then how many tracks that would be.
Would Armin select tracks by looking at the label first or would it be that most tracks he likes (or his audience likes), happen to come from the same label and sub-labels?
To me it's kind of logical that he plays more from labels which release tracks which meet his taste.
I don't know any numbers but would these labels maybe also release much more tracks then other labels? |
Armin has people to pick the tracks for him, he's not the only one involved in ASOT tracklisting.
So yeh, his guys negotiate with the usual labels on deals, and then Armin plays whatever they got the best deal for.

I'm not making any accusation, it's just perhaps an explanation as to why there's such a narrow spectrum of labels. Tracklisting for such a commercial show doesn't just involve listening to music and finding great tracks, otherwise you wouldn't need other people to help you.
Money wouldn't be involved, I highly doubt it would ever get to that point. (direct financial benefit anyway)
It's more all the label politics that goes on, Armin can't physically play a track which he hasn't received. He can't rip from youtube and play it, he has to be given a pre-release copy which means he needs permission from the producer/label.
At the end of the day people want to hear the most popular hits on ASOT so Armin's always going to want to play A&B tracks etc, but A&B want exclusive Anjuna exposure for a while but still want to reach a maximum audience so eventually they let others play them. Vice-Versa of course.
How often do you think Armin gets a track from an "unknown" producer/label and listens to it and thinks "oh this is cool I'll play this on ASOT".

Armin could really care less about labels. Obviously he's gonna play more tracks from ajuna, armada, etc since these labels get the majority of the big tracks and he's first in line for them. But he has said that he'll play anything he likes if it's sent to him or whatever. I think he does a great job at playing fresh new tracks every week.

Oh come on, Armin does not play fresh tracks... He plays the big tracks everyone wants to hear, that all the other big shows play, and the tracks which will all end up at the top of beatport.
