Even though efforts are being made to outlaw such discrimination, It is still prevalant at large, a defacto layering of the society so to speak. For instance, a marraige in culture like India has many strings attached, making it very hard to marry up.

Lol, i just remembered my Indian buddy from high school, he was convinced he was of brahman heritage, but the guy was black as night. he would get really really pissed whenever we called him untouchable

thats all BS, it does not exist anymore, i was born and bought up in india, spent like 16 years of my life there. Hardly any discrimination and the stuff they showed in the movie is very OD'ed

No offense, but this makes your statements appear a little biased. These are usually the people oblivious to the real effects of social orders.

Did you watch the Mike Rowe on TED Talks video? Notice how the humane society, PETA, and the SPCA all say that the way castration happens is with a rubber band, yet when he actually gets to it, that is not how it's done? Same shit.

Proving my exact point. Paris Hilton is fucking oblivious to the things that make having to bust your ass your whole life for very little because she isn't affected by it.

I didn't grow up with tons of money, but even I know that I never had it THAT bad.

I dont have anything on your 16 years, but i lived in Cuff Parade for 3 years, I have visited after i moved, and i live in a city that is over 40 percent indian, so i am not talking out of my ass bro.

You pretend like there's nothing, but you are sheltered from the day to day bullshit. do you realize that since you travel, speak english well, have access to internet, you fall into a very high percentile of indians.

the last time i had to deal with an indian cop i was on a moped miles away from a city, and they flatout robbed me in the middle of the night.

India is one of the more rapidly developing places in the world, and as anywhere development always comes hand in hand with inequality - the abolishment of the caste system has done some good in alleviating social barriers, but income inequality is actually on the rise. There's some anthropological research on the correlation between ethnic group and caste with income distribution, but I can't seem to recall any of them at the moment. This newspaper article touches on it though:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy...7062002535.html

In any case, though most of the scenes in Slumdog were designed to show the state of development fifteen years ago, poverty does persist (mostly in rural areas). The Gini coefficient (measuring wealth disparity) indicates a pretty wide gap between rich and poor. Over 1/3 of the world's poor live in India, despite the fact that Africa is generally considered the face of poverty. Today over 80% of the population (roughly 850 million people) live on less than $.50 a day... a higher percentage than in Africa.

India is actually a really fascinating example of capitalism run rampant - it's usually accepted as norm that economic liberalization and macroeconomic growth are good for a society, but India raises some pretty interesting questions about the inherent inequality in the free-market economic development. Capitalist competition is decidedly not pro-poor, though it does provide some pretty magnificent results for some.

There's a huge debate at the World Bank, among other places, about how to interpret the lessons of India in an African context - namely whether the types of reform undertaken by the Indian state have been effective in reducing poverty or not and whether those policies should be replicated in Africa. India is a macroeconomic miracle, and capital entrepreneurship and innovation are self-evident, but overall it's difficult to make the argument that the average citizen is really better off.
