I sent this out to my candidates yesterday, thought you guys might like to read it....

Very strange times in the market, I must admit. Our economy is uncertain and our population is wary but if past recession experience is anything to go by, both my personal experience and that of my esteemed colleagues; careers still happen, candidates still take new and exciting positions, clients still operate in business and good recruiters still make those partnerships happen.

My heart goes out to those who have lost their jobs and because of this, I thought I would share some recruitment wisdom gathered from the past 8 years I have spent in the business. It’s not guaranteed but if you keep these things in mind, I am sure a new role will be around the corner;

Your resume is a sales document! Never forget this. Keep it truthful and concise but always remember to read it back to yourself from the client’s eyes. The phrase ‘which means that’ is a great one when analyzing your resume e.g. I recruited 300 people within a year which means that I am able to process large volumes of work, gather concise information from hiring managers and source for applicable candidates in a timely manner. You can also apply the Feature Advantage Benefit (FAB) sales technique to your resume. A Feature is a statement, the Advantage is how you did it and the Benefit is what it means to the reader e.g. I implemented Peoplesoft HRIS by assembling a project team, using MS Project to track the project and its timelines and liaising with the vendor. This means that I could effortlessly repeat this process for your organization with maximum efficiency.

Secure a position doing something you’re experienced in! Now is not the time to make a career change or expect a substantially more senior role from a move. Seek a position with a company that interests you with duties that you’re adept at.

Don’t expect a salary hike! As much as I don’t believe you should drop your salary, I also see that the market has slowed substantially so be a little more flexible on your earnings expectations in favour of employment.

Stay positive! I know, I know, easier said than done BUT it is necessary to keep positive thoughts at the forefront of your emotions, especially in an interview.

We just lost another person on our team. Once 10 is now 8.

I will never understand how they select people... You would assume its the old 55 years olds or the people with poor performance, but it appears to be completely random.

Bahhh I just want to go home and start my weekend.

At least it's made me thankful for a job a hate some much, but at the same time my dislike for this company has only grown stronger.

I swear sometimes telus just turns the whole network off to save money.

That is because you are in the GTA, and Telus operates under Bell. Guys that I know out west, who are actually under Telus' network, swear by it.

I wonder how many Bell is going to have to lay off because of their botched privatization attempt, and then blame it on the economy?

I hope it gets better when I finish school. It makes me wonder whether or not I should stay and work in Canada or work overseas...

I work with huge commercial accounts, banks, chain stores and I honestly cannot complain.

Thank you Rach
