i'm going to have to agree with what rann said about laptops disconnecting the dj from the crowd

there a screen popping up blocking your view and more importantly, the crowds view of you, even if it's off to the side, there's still a screen blocking something somewhere

when i perform, i'm always engaging the crowd, making eye contact with people around the room, involving them in the experience

even mid mix, there's few points where i'll be looking at what i'm doing, at this point i know where everything is and can manipulate the mixer or decks/cdjs without looking

like the roger sanchez quote, i feel what the crowd is feeling and react and plan my set out accordingly

live gigs are completely different than planning out a set to record in the studio, there's nothing like having the crowd in the palm of your hand while connecting with the whole room and having everyone go off with each successive mix

so yea, even taking your attention off the crowd for a little to glance at your screen, it's like they're just there, dancing to a jukebox, it's the experience that people pay for, not just some dude standing there picking songs

Good Post. I do agree that when the DJ has a laptop/DVS it seems to take their focus away from the crowd and puts it onto their laptop. Its like their playing the set to their laptop and the crowd is almost non-existant (this is a bit of an exageration but you get my point).

Despite this, I am still a big supporter of DVS systems in general, but yeah its definitely more fun to watch a DJ on just vinyl/CDs.

Yes, but that's what the thread is about - CD or Latops are BOTH digital mediums, so ther're no argument that digital DJ'ing is the future - the thread asks what type of digital DJ'ing is the future.

One thing for perspective though, go back 20 years and Vinyl was dead as a commercial product - it was the stuff your dad bought in the 70's

I remeber buying my first decks and older generations going "I thought it had all gone CD - is vinyl making a comeback?"

I was fringe culture movements (hip hop and EDM) that got young people buying it again, long after all major commercial outlets and labels dropped it. It was relegated to a small number audiophile sales. So when it became popular amongst DJ's because of it's manipulation capability (i.e. pitching, scratching), it then over time became a mainstream (to a degree) medium again, because enough people were buying it to make shops stock it.

I don't see vinyl coming back in big way (sadly), becuase logistically, it has too many commercial limitations: it's heavy (therefore is expensive to ship and affects the price), it can be damaged, and can't be copied easily (which is a good thing IMO but many people like to not pay for music so it becomes a negative for the masses).

I for one would happily pay $8-$10 a record but most people won't.

Anyway, back OT - digital is here to stay, but anyone who has been around long enough or looks at patterns in life, knows things have a cyclical nature, so maybe we'll all buying music out of real crates rather than virtual ones again soon....

So true. Good post. I still buy vinyl but not as often as say five years ago. I think I did misinterpret the topic somewhat. I guess it's kinda hard to say where the direction digital DJing is going to go, but maybe it will remain both CDJs and laptops with controllers.
