I fell in love with music at an early age and always new that music was going to be my life. |
It's great that you have been able to make a career out of something you are so passionate about and thoroughly enjoy. Not many people can say that. I have nothing but respect for what you do and am eternally grateful for you bringing in artists that we would not otherwise have the opportunity to see in this city. Atlanta is a difficult market for EDM and there is considerable financial risk associated with booking many DJ's who may or may not give you a healthy return on investment. The Prydz show a year or so ago is a good testament to how venue selection can really make you or break you in this town. It was a phenomenal show and a rare opportunity; that being said, I did recognize that WetBar was nowhere near capacity, which is unfortunate because Opera probably would have been packed, which in turn would make it more likely that he would get booked in the rare instance that he comes through this area again. (I could be wrong because I don't know what the ticket sales were like, I'm purely using observational evidence.)
You are right, crowds are mobile and there are going to be people that you don't like anywhere. (In quick defense of what some people here have said, I don't think they [at least most of them] have problems with people who are there to try something new and have fun. I think it's more the subset of the population that is like "this shit sucks" or "wft is this crap" or "I can't believe people actually listen to this stuff" during the entire show, which, let's face it, does happen with considerably greater frequency at Opera. It starts to ware on you. I love the opportunity to introduce people to EDM and have turned many people onto it over the years; it's a great feeling. I think the crowd segment at Opera that frustrates some people consists of the people who are negative and judgmental. On our end, we could have communicated the concern better than by being negative and judgmental ourselves.) That aside, there is one common sentiment about that place that is legitimate and entirely preventable -- the attitude of the staff. They do need to treat people with more respect and at least pretend that they appreciate our patronage. I think that the onus is on the management at that place to coach people out of their current approach and mentality. Their industry, after all, is hospitality as much as it is entertainment. If I saw or heard of a reasonable effort being made on this front, I would go to shows at Opera much more frequently.

1. Anybody has the right to go to Opera.
2. I love seeing the place packed. It shows great respect for the DJs.
3. I'm just saying that the dozens and dozens of people there not listening to the music really ruin my night. You don't have to be a die hard EDM fan to actually listen to the music. I never had this problem at WETBar. Everyone at WETBar was there listening to the music as far as I could tell.
4. Life isn't too short...it's the longest thing you'll ever experience.
5. I don't think of these shows as being mine. Far from it. I don't feel entitled about anything. I go to a lot of shows where I have no idea what is being played, but I still listen to the music (Carl Cox, Sasha, Digweed, Deadmau5, Lee Burridge, Nic Faniculi, Kazell, Kaskade). I have no idea what songs they play. I still actually go to dance and listen to the music though. I don't go and then spend the entire time walking through people and being a douche bag in general who gives nasty looks to people who are dancing and listening to the music.
6. Seeing a show at Opera is the equivalent of seeing a movie on opening night in the middle of the summer. Not only is the place beyond crowded, but the movie theatre oversold tickets for the showing I bought tickets to. So now I enter the theatre and there are no seats. What's worse is, this is the only time this movie will be shown in Atlanta for about 8-12 months. So I have to sit on the stairs. What's worse is, the people around me where I am being forced to have such a shitty seat are talking throughout the movie and whenever I ask them to keep it quiet, they give me a nasty look and tell me to shut up. And to make things even worse, the screen the projector is playing on has a bunch of dirt and crud on it ruining the actual image.
7. It really seems like none of you are getting what I am saying except for those of you who agree with me. Those of you disagreeing with me aren't actually disagreeing with me. You think you disagree with me, but it really seems like you have no idea what I am talking about.

And like I said before a few times. By all means keep doing what you're doing. I didn't expect to change anything. But I definitely won't change anything by just keeping my mouth shut. So keep using Opera by all means. I'm just one customer after all. It does appear hundreds and hundreds of people like that place.
Do realize though, that my analogy used in #6 is 100% accurate. If you don't realize this, you need to get a better grasp on your product.

That was a good analogy. I've heard it a lot, but have people actually verbally been rude to a lot of you guys? I wouldn't doubt it, just curious.
And the whole Wetbar was better than Opera thing, I'm not so sure. The sound may be better, as well as the atmosphere, but as I said before, I've had trouble with people there just like at Opera. I only went there 3 times and it wasn't overly packed, but then again, the djs weren't mega djs either. People have had terrible experiences at Wetbar just as much as they have Opera. I think it all depends on who's playing.

Well I've seen Armin...Ferry... at WETBar isn't that where Sander played too?
I know some people have had some bad experiences there...but I haven't.
The sound there was better and the crowd was better...at least in my experiences.

I actually had several friends who would only go out if the show was specifically not at Opera...guess I'm joining them.
