this is why the term "arab jews" for example can be seen as controversial. Then it is argued that they were just jews living in Arab lands. Fair enough, what about Berber jews, Kurdish jews, etc?

You're pretty much right on this one. There's no real way to prove it with most Jewish people I suppose although I do know for a fact that DNA testes were done that linked Jews from different parts of the world to the same source in the Middle East (or at least something along those lines). Personally though I was born in Israel and my extended family is very Jewish for the most part, so I don't have any doubts about myself.
