Not many other people have your collection of hardware synths either. What VSTs do you prefer to it? |
I can't say I'd prefer any VSTs to even a Virus B. *maybe* I'd take the Arturia 10 year collection over a Virus B, but those things eat CPU for breakfast...
The Wavetables on the Virus are very thin. The advantage is that they're more high-fi than the XT, but in general the XT just sounds better... fuller and more digitally weird.
The Andromeda is almost an obvious choice over the Virus...
The NL3 sounds much fuller vs the Virus. For some sounds, like supersaws and crap, you can't hear it, but for things like FM, syncing, and unison basselines, the NL3 rocks the virus. Although the Hypersaw on the TI can sound pretty cool and competes with the NL3.
The best thing about the Virus is its filters... very precise and have a cool/modern character. That's why I recommended a Virus B earlier in this thread. No need to pay for the TI features. Not worth the hassle/price IMO.

That was mainly what I was interested in hearing.
I can't really confirm or deny your other points as I've spent about 3 minutes of time playing around with all of the synths you mention combined. I'd be really curious to hear some short clips of the sounds you're talking about though that are much fuller on your other hardware synths.

LMFAO at some of the responses in this thread. Where can I get some of the meth being smoked here?
It's pretty clear who here has actually used a Virus. Some may not feel it's worth the price tag, but believe me if you have one sitting on your desk you'll likely use little other than it.
Yes VSTs blah blah are great blah blah. FFS I use Ableton and a lot of my sounds come from an Operator-driven instrument rack, but that said, when it's time for the real meat and potatoes you look to the Virus; otherwise you're just sending a boy, or perhaps a barely-post-pubescent adolescent to do a man's job.
The virus is capable of sounds that I guarantee you, nor anyone else has heard in their entire lives. Those sounds may not necessarily work in a trance production, but to claim that there's some sort of "virus sound" that you can immediately recognize is a down-right idiotic thing to say. Perhaps you can immediately recognize the over-used Manuel Schleiss rom bank instantly, but if you think that's all this beast is good for then you're clueless. |

Forgive me for exagerrating, it was a bit too much to say that you'll use "little other than it", as that's not even the case for myself. You'll probably run out of voices in a hurry if you start stacking Virus patches, unless of course you're making really simple ones, in which case sure, may as well just use your preferred VST because you're not actually getting any of the benefits from it anyways.
my point is just that it's an *extremely* versatile piece of hardware and can make a huge number of unique sounds, and for that reason I don't really see how it could collect dust in someone's studio. I'm actually curious what Storyteller reaches for before his Virus and the when/whys. |

Actually yes, I realized that my first post was pretty retarded and didn't specify that I was comparing the Virus to VSTs. I haven't spent any significant amounts of time with hardware synths so I can't compare them. I should have made that clear.
My first two signed tracks (to Gesture and Armada respectively) only used VSTs and instruments built for Jeksola Buzz, so I'm not some hardware purist. I have used a shitload of VSTs, and can say that I'm personally way happier with the TI and would recommend it to anyone looking to add hardware to their setup.
If you think the Virus is "suck", that's nice, we'll just have to agree to completely disagree on the subject.

lol sorry about the lame grammar "is suck" lol. what i mean is that it sounds worse than all the other hardware synths i have owned when it comes to what kind of sounds i want to make, which normaly is basic saw sounds mostly with a couple of oscs detuned or octave up down. this is beacuse the oscs in virus are pretty weak imo. i hardly use efex except a little distortion. for that use i concluded with NL3 > JP8080 > MicroQ > Virus. Then I sold them all lol.
