There were new sounds, subgenres, new currents etc. Even though there was lots of garbage objectively tech house as a genre had a good year in 2009 and i can see it doing good this year too.
Yeah I am definitely not dismissing the whole genre, I have tons of tech-house tracks. I love some of them too... I am just referring to the boring type with no melody that I was talking about in the OP

I think part of the problem is people releasing tracks as "DJ Tools / Dance Tracks" first, and "good music" second.
If every song sounds the same, has the same structure, etc - it's easier to be played by less-skilled DJs and more likely to result in higher ratings on beat port/whatever.
It's almost shocking how quickly you can build up a 'danceable' (but not necessarily good) track.

Agreed. Technology has made it easier to come up with tracks that fit that sound, and now the barriers to entry to sell a track are much less than they were a few years back when you had to get signed by a label and have a record pressed, promoted, distributed etc.
It is funny to go through tracks on beatport these days and listen to multiple tracks (in almost any genre) and not hear a single melody. Just beats, bass, hi hats, hi hats close together (build up) no hi hats (breakdown) then more beats.
However there is tons of great music out there, and the djs who play a broad spectrum (without you really noticing) are truly some of the best. (jay and jeff -your right on!)
Loco Dice does this well. He usually appears to play a tech or minimal sounding set, but usually half his tracks are really nice deep house pieces, and thats what I think brings a nice swing and groove to all of his sets.
- Technology has played a big factor in the rise of this style of tech-house.
- this is exactly the type of tech-house I am referring to: "It is funny to go through tracks on beatport these days and listen to multiple tracks (in almost any genre) and not hear a single melody. Just beats, bass, hi hats, hi hats close together (build up) no hi hats (breakdown) then more beats."
- I think the biggest problem is not that this type of music exists, its more that a lot of DJs play nothing but this style of tech-house for an entire set. I would love to hear this style of tech house thrown in here and there throughout a set, but an entire set of this stuff is just monotonous and boring.

go listen to old Jay Tripwire releases and you will understand that OP would not know what he was talking about if it took a shit on his chest.
I am not talking about the whole genre of tech-house, just the specific style that I was attempting to describe in the OP.

Much of the issue with today's electronic music is the disposable nature of it... new producers churning out paint-by-numbers tracks with little or no personality or originality. It's all about quantity over quality and the primary concern being beatport's charts rather than actually writing a good song that will stand the test of time... on top of that SO MUCH good music is overlooked on beatport because many dj's jump right to the top 100 of each genre.
With today's ease of use and affordable technology there should be NO EXCUSE for using these lame sample/loop cd's (the same ones being used again and again) or for sampling another artists work.
If you really love the music how about learning to play an instrument or two, and using your ears to teach yourself how to CREATE rather than imitate.
EXACTLY!

Maybe if someone put something out there that was a little better then garbage I might start listening again....but right now the best anyone is doing is pond scum.

in closing - anti-genre music rules all.
hey Apocoliptos BFF Look at your sig is says tech style
dont change your stance now because people are bored with a style of music you & your friends play & want to hear more of a style closer to mine
Since when have you been into the no genre thing dont lie either I have your post on this board to quote
you & your friends are genre whores but the thing is you dont know much about many genres
Just say the truth the best kind of music is the stuff you dont play
The stuff you cant do because you & your friends dont have enough brains or balls to do it
you have to wait on others & mock them then when you see thats the new thing you try to imitate thats the sign of a scared dj
why even call yourself a dj say your somebody who plays music after real producers/djs make/play it
At least I see that your a trend following dj not a dj that creates trends you should stick to giving out flyers for your BFF apocolipto

disagree, house music was build on samples / sampling it is still a very much true today, using/masking a good sample is already 30% of a good house track IMO (ok not in a way ***** uses them though)
I use samples like everyone else does in music I do try 2 use them differently from anyone else thats true thats for the credit
I dont have to hide most because you guys dont know much about music outside your comfort zone
most of you dont know about music like you talk about you know about 1 kind of music & make fun of others
Thanks for saying my name im glad you asscoiate sampling edm & good music with me

I think there are a few dj's that I've seen who actually have the balls to really mix it up...on that really sticks out in my mind is derek may ( hip hop, reggae, trance and disco in one set)
the one thing you cant teach a dj is to be themselves
most djs are not themselves & they dont have the balls or brains to be themselves with music thats why they dont stick out
If you be yourself with music you will stick out
if you play the same stuff everyone else does then jump on trends call yourself Apocolipto's BFF & friends

Just like any major musical trend, things reach a point where the market gets flooded with loads of garbage....there's a ton of stuff out there right now that sounds like complete fodder.
+1. It's reached a saturation point right now. It's like electro in late 2006/early 2007. Things are stale, and we need a breath of fresh air. There are just waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too many shit tracks getting produced right now.
One thing is for sure though: although the sound is stale right now, there are still a few DJs out there who can lay down a ridiculous "tech house" set that will leave your world spinning. The problem is, there is an infinite number of DJs out there who attempt to ride this bandwagon that will bore you to tears.

This happens all the time whenever [insert genre here] becomes popular in Toronto and DJs jump on the bandwagon.
I grow tired of this pattern and occurrence myself, and I suggest you move out of here.

And this is whats on in most of the world now. So pretty soon someone will start this thread and replace tech house with funky house.
Although i dont think ill ever get sick of funk/disco house. I never did after the first time it came around!
In a few years when Toronto catches up to the rest of the world (and when a different style of music is popular in the rest of the world at that point), DJs here will still find a way to ruin funky/disco house.

I have to agree with Adamo. Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but where are the clubs that you're going to that keep playing the same stuff. The clubs that post events on TOTA may all seem to play the same music, but there are many other parties out there that AREN'T posted on TOTA. If you like a certain style of music, seek it out b/c it's more than likely out there.
As I mentioned above, people who live in Toronto have nothing to complain about as they have club after club after club that play EDM, and bring in a wide variety of DJs. Windsor has one club that plays dance music. We don't have a choice. If you don't like the type of music one club places, check out one of the other ones.
It's all relative. Coming from a place like Windsor which has pretty much NO variety in terms of electronic music, sure Toronto seems like it has lots of variety. Fact is, on a worldwide scale, Toronto is pretty bad in terms of variety of electronic music in the clubs.

It's not the best, but I wouldn't say it's "pretty bad". Also, how can you possibly make this assertion? What is this based on?

Semiderail... this thread made me feel like digging through Rob Hood tracks on Youtube.
Robert Hood - Home, not exactly a banger of a track but damn good. It's also used heavily in the opening of DE9: Transitions which has a special little place for me.
Robert Hood - Chase
Cristian Vogel also has some good stuff, for a track I'd call "Minimal Techno", but still has a nice chuggy-drive:
