Best VST for arpeggio design?

I've created a monster!

Enjoying Catanya though.

I know it is a little late to be relevant, but for arpeggios, has anyone considered the 'tracker' type programs that have been used to made computer music for ages? Most of them have this built in effect where you put in your note, then a couple numbers that describe the amount and direction of your arpegiating. The chiptunes tend over-use the hell out of that effect and you almost get sick of hearing all the arpy notes in those old mod files. As far as modern tracks go a relatively well known one that uses that chippy arpeggiator abuse type sound recently was tiesto's "louder than boom".

probably not the sound you were going for when putting up the question though, but I imagine it is possible to use the effect without sounding like a chiptune.

I guess the tradeoff to using a tracker is that the effect probably only works from a sample and that if can only trigger like 2 or 3 notes.

Still I thought it might be interesting to mention that tracker programs have included that little arpeggiator built in effect thingy since almost as long as I've been alive. I am mostly just a kid playing with noisy toys but I like to do my stuff in renoise and it has that old arpeggiator thingy in it.

This whole thing might not even be close to what we are talking about here, disregard this if im making no sense at all :P

While I don't share the extreme sentiment for Leon that Lenient does I would love to have you show me even ONE trance producer who has made as good of tracks as CONSISTENTLY as Leon has for the past 5 years or so. I'll be waiting...

Hey Cryo - Do you think you could explain the basics along with the specifics of an arp and step sequencer. Not much to say about an arp I don't think but step sequencers seem to be a lot more flexible thus allowing them to be more open to technological advances. I re-downloaded the Thesys demo and am checking it out again and was just curious if you could shine some light on this subject. As always, thanks a ton in advance.

An arpeggiator just plays back the notes that you feed into it. So, if you play/sequence a Cmaj chord (C/E/G) into it, it will only play back C, E, and G, but it obviously cycles through them in a rhythmic pattern (e.g., up, down, up/down, random, etc.). And, most arps allow you to play back those notes over a range of several octaves. Catanya gives you a lot of flexibility to create your own arp patterns. But, the key point is that you cannot tell an arpeggiator to play back notes that aren't fed into it. In other words, you can't play that Cmaj chord into Catanya and have it spit out a pattern containing D, F, A, etc. notes or create a melody containing notes that aren't played into it.

Step sequencers have much flexibility and come in more varieties. They can trigger notes, intervals, performance parameters, etc. When working with notes, step sequencers are often used to create one-note melodies by creating a sequence of notes relative to what you play into it. For example, say I play a C5 into a step sequence assigned to play the following sequence of intervals (i.e., the step sequence is assigned to change oscillator pitch in semitones):

0 3 -2 0 7 0 10

the notes played back from holding down the C5 (note 0) would be:

C5 Eb5 Bb4 C5 G5 C5 Bb5

And, if I tried playing a a Cmin chord into that same sequence, I'm going to get all of those intervals played relative to each note in my Cmin chord (in other words, a complete clusterf*** of notes). That's what I mean when I say that a step sequencer is not an arp and vice-versa. Step sequencers are great for creating "one-note wonders."

Many step sequencers (esp. Thesys) will work on much more than just note intervals. For example, Thesys will let you assign sequences to any MIDI CC value and much more. So, you can sequence filter cutoff, PWM, portamento, effects parameters, etc. and route it to any synth that can receive MIDI CCs.

edit: clarified step sequence intervals
