Get your newspapers while you can.

In preparation of the G20 summit, the city will strip about 745 newspaper boxes from downtown Toronto by Friday.

This is part of a larger plan to remove some 1,000 pieces of street furniture for the June 26-27 summit at the Metro Convention Centre. Also being taken down are 29 transit shelters, 200 litter bins and five information pillars, all of which will be gone by June 9.

“It is not unusual for this kind of measure to be put in place to ensure the safety of everyone during a time when we expect a heavier than normal number of pedestrians,” said city spokesperson Kevin Sack. “We want to ensure a very safe G20 experience for everyone.”

The removals will affect the area bordered by Queen St. W. and Lake Ontario and Yonge St. and Spadina Ave. Queen’s Park is the summit’s designated protest site and furniture will also be removed from University Ave. between Queen St. W. and Bloor St. W. by June 18.

The newspaper boxes will be reinstalled starting July 5 and street furniture will be reinstalled starting June 28.

Sack said each newspaper will be removing its own boxes and Astral Media Outdoor, which supplies and maintains street furniture for the city, is responsible for removing the transit shelters, litter bins and information pillars.

Garbage bags will be temporarily replacing the waste bins so Torontonians can still deposit their litter, Sack said. The city is also still considering whether any bicycle rings need to be removed, he said.

Meanwhile, Canada Post is also removing its mailboxes from the downtown core starting June 18. They will be returned June 28.

I can understand the newspaper & mailboxes but the street furniture/shelters is a bit much. Extra lol @ the possible removal of bike posts

To add what Jay said, anything that can be dismantled and used as weapons, and anything made of glass that can injure.

There's going to be so much shenanigans by "peaceful" protesters, I can wait to watch the serious ass-kicking.

Yeah cause people can put bombs in garbage bins, they're trying to take every safe precaution. It's a bit excessive but better safe than sorry.

Exactly. If my memory serves me correctly, the Atlanta Olympic pipe bombing was hidden in a garbage can. So I guess it makes sense that they would eliminate the possibility that it can happen again.

Yeah, newspapers make perfect projectiles!

They should also maybe dismantle the sidewalk blocks! Those make perfect projectiles. If the protestors want to find something to throw, they will. They can bring stuff ...

Holly shit they're tranforming/shutting down/dismantling the entire downtown core just for this, its kinda silly.

Ok

I've changed my mind about going to the protest, the whole thing is a joke at this point, not exactly sure how attending will do anything to anything. What a horse shit government we have... I feel like their treating the masses like children, more so than usual.
