That's exactly the thing though... he is far closer to an entertainer at a concert than he is a DJ.

He does combine his tracks with other peoples music. However, out of an entire live performance by him you might find only a a few select tracks that are NOT his. Ultimately, he IS catering to both sides of the spectrum but at the same time he is leaning more towards what HE wants out of the live performance. Its much like when a DJ is an up and comer and has to play out to what the audience wants to hear. As time goes by and that DJ starts getting bigger he will start playing more specific to his niche sound despite what people may or may not like. Thus, he no longer caters to what the audience wants because hes already built up the rapport of his fans to show them that when you go to a Deadmau5 show you are there for his unique visual/audio experience.
The people going to his show should have a good indication of what they are going to hear prior to going (primarily his own productions). Expecting a "DJ" like performance is simply setting yourself up for failure. This is true the majority of the time when people have specific expectations when going to see their favourite DJ. They are expecting to hear a specific sound or track because that DJ might have played it before or at another show in another city or in prior years but like every artist, their sound evolves and changes and its the only way for an artist to progress forward. Otherwise their sound, passion and everything else that makes them what they are become stagnant.
This is very true for Tiesto and something Deadmau5 has avoided quite well. Since the birth of Tiesto' massive trance productions and his huge success, he has been UNSUCCESSFUL at turning the other cheek to show people that he is far more capable of exploring other genres instead of making big room trance for decades on end. Everyone going to a Tiesto show EXPECTS him to play his classic sound of the early 00's which simply won't happen anymore unless a specific event is very special to him. |
yo are you his PR agent?
