I can't condone the animal cruelty part...but eating these animals is fine. Dogs and/or cats used for food consumption comprise of breeds solely used for this.(these aren't strays found on the street, they are raised essentially like any other meat we eat.)
Chinese people actually own cats and dogs as pets. In a few generations the practice of eating dogs will fade as the country gets richer, and the older population (which tends to be the one that eats these things the most) dies off. A lot of young Chinese would not touch dog meat, especially those living in metropolitan areas. Eating dog is also much more common among the poor outside of these areas. The Chinese government has also attempted to pass a bill against the sale of dog meat, but it never could happen because of a huge amount of impoverished people that use this as a food source.
I've eaten dog once, and to be honest it was pretty delicious. Koreans breed only one type of dog for this. It is technically illegal, but the older generation still eats it and believes that it helps the body cope with extreme heat. Bositang (dog soup) is typically consumed only in the summer.
that being said cocks are delicious too.
