commercial? commercial is all that we can buy or sell. The radioshows are made for commercial purpose. We listen it, than choose tracks that we like, go to the shops and buy it (if we have no money or don't wonna waste them we search for the pirates publish). Of course the other side sense of the radioshow is rating of the dj, PR of the other dj (with guestmixes) and PR of the producers/musicians. The radioshows with TL is always commercial, i think! Interesting about POT... There was no any official TL, only from funs(us & here). |
I understand your point, but that is not commercial in my opinion. Take Perfecto's and Oakey's OWN releases. They almost all contain 'Radio Edits' with the releases - that will get played on Mainstream radio and many reach the 'Charts.' - 'Faster Kill Pussycat' is just 1 example of MANY[Southern Sun, Sex N Money etc...]
Oakey NEVER plays the edits which might have been made for a commercial purpose - their main aim to chart and make money. He always play non-commercial mixes of any track, regardless of it was made for commercial purposes.
I know this wasn't what you meant, but related to above ->[Many DJ's, not just Oakey, get wrongly accused, IMO, of 'selling out' by going 'commercial' or another word for this is simply 'Pop.' by missing the distinct difference I mention above.
Example - I've seen people criticising Steve Angello for this, because he relocated to LA, and was asked to remix or produce a 'Pop' artist or track - I mean, C'mon! - Pacha Ibiza don't have a commercial DJ as resident for a few years running - if they did nobody would go!. A commercial DJ is a mainstream radio presenter playing Pop music, or DJ's people book for weddings and parties.
Nobody can deny DJ's/producers the right to make as much money as they can from doing their job, as long as it doesn't affect what I listen too, I'm happy ]
I also suspect that a lot of Oakey 'fans' that once loved him and then slated him a few years later [G.U forum in my experience] did so, because he plays MANY tracks [& Bootlegs] that people have heard in pop charts [Or Pop artists productions.] Which leads them to believe it's somehow not 'Underground' enough for them anymore! - Killers is just 1 example, Snow Patrol, Britney etc...Yet the remixes Oakey plays will NEVER be heard on the radio's of people who are 'fans' of these groups.
Indeed, the fans of the artists above, I reckon would NOT enjoy the remixes Oakey plays of the artists. Because they AREN'T commercial.
Just like I am only aware of some of the artists tracks, BECAUSE he plays these remixes - It works both ways. And when I'm in a pub for example, and the jukebox starts playing 'Killers - Mr Brightside' - I'm left thinking - This is SHIT, I only wish I could plug my MP3 player in and let them hear how good this is, in my world. Again 1 example of hundreds!
Remember the ongoing debate on the old EM tracklistings forum about the 'Vengaboys' track 'Paradise' from Shanghai EM? - Even I was guilty of that. Nobody believed, for 2 YEARS, somebodies post ID'ing it as Vengaboys. How could it be!!! 'Going to Ibiza' LOL....It was! And when has, or will 'Vengaboys - Paradise' EVER be/been played on a main radio channel? - I dont know, I strongly suspect never
I know a lot of Sasha fans did this [some in person] - and I'm not professing to know a great deal about Sasha, except I believe he worked a lot with Jacques Le Cont, [Please correct me if that's wrong ] aka Thin White Duke - Who, was also Madonna's main producer.
And who is Madonna's favourite DJ....?
Oakey.
Agree about the tracklists we are getting - and also the label they are on - must be a 'Mixcloud' thing. Good on them, and it forces Oakey to actually put some effort into producing tracklists. Something I suspect he is not fond of

Listeners like us will not lose out as long as Perfecto labels like Perfecto Digital, Perfecto Black, Sound of the Renegades (Spitfire, Bad Apples...) continue to release mix packages with or without Armada (Robert Vadney's case shows that Perfecto is still determine to live their mission).
We should not worry too much about the 'invasion' of Armada sound as it is made up of many sub-labels. The good thing for Perfecto artists including Paul is that they can play the tracks that they like, including those signed under Armada sub labels.
Since the PP era:
-It is very obvious that either Paul and Perfecto has build some kind of work system or structure to let Paul find a balance between his own projects and trance. (Paul, Paul's management team and Perfecto A&R should be thanked for this I guess)
Specifically to the radioshow:
-I am just glad that ASOT podcast's 'voice-over attacks' are not forced on PP. PP voice-overs are still very cool with Paul's speech and tracklist advise. Even the current Perfecto voice (guess who......Robert Vadney who welcomed us to the club)is fitting well with the mix. Frequency wise is OK too.
-There are more special features: seems to have more and more Oakenfold edits. Also Planet Perfecto and Oakenfold exclusive are rather organic (not always on the same spot like other podcasts).
Small suggestion is that remixed version and edits from Paul's soundtrack or more mainstream projects can be featured more as that's what makes Another World, Goa Mix unique (Glad to have the 2011)(Inclusion of Paul's edits of Time and Around The World are both very nice)
To end this post, just like to say good luck and thanks to Paul and Perfecto team!! All of you should should know that your hard work are always obvious and appreciated by listeners.
