Exactly. It's one thing doing it once in awhile, but not every weekend. Plus either having to have a DD or get a hotel. It's not an every weekend thing.

I'm all for the club and seriously hyped, I'll be making trips from my town on a regular basis. Sure will beat the 2.5hr drive to Toronto.

How is that a dis? It's another perspective. Negative, yes. Contructive to the owners, yes actually. You gotta look at all sides for a business. That's all part of a business plan when you present it to a bank for a loan or venture capitalists. How many times have you told a girl the haircut she just got looks awesome, when it looks like a shamwow on a stick?

I would want to hear my challenges too when I start up a business, not just hear from fluffers.

I'm sure Ryan expected this when opening this thread. It's part of his marketing campain. For one I applaud him for stating it, and for two, he's taking his advice in a positive manner. Neither Ryan nor Chem seem to have their heads hiding in the sand, so all is good.

Exactly....I've already said numerous times that I wish them all the luck in the world and I hope it is a success. If Ryan wants to discuss some of the issues myself and friends have had with opening a club in KW then I would love to talk to him about them.

I agree that for people in the area it will be nice to stay home and party in their own backyard. I just don't know if there is enough people to keep the party going every saturday....especially in the summer months. There will always be a portion of the party people that will go to Toronto because DJ So and So is in town.

Beta is already doing one thing right that will help them out...and that is bringing in international DJs. IF they bring in the right international DJs then they can probably get people from Toronto coming to KW to party...which has always been a problem. Way back in the late 90s and early 2000s it wasn't even something we considered possible.

Funny, because I remember going to see loads of international DJs in K-W in the late 1990s/early 2000s and there being a scene here - albeit a small one. Slam, Frankie Bones, Chris Liberator, Scan-X, Funk D'Void and Misstress Barbara are just a few of the people I recall having gone to see or DJed with at various venues/parties in days gone by.

The only place I've seen a club of this scope in terms of what they're putting inside Beta is NYC or Miami. Coupled with a sound booking policy, I expect this will work. It may not be packed out every weekend, but I think the time is ripe in this city for a venue to start doing something. It's worked here in the past at several venues that were nowhere near the level this is at.

You can make a clubnight work in a uni-based town. It's all down to the marketing and how you do it. I lived in St. Catharines for four years and ran a house club for 2.5 years that was very successful - and it was in a dive. The reason it worked was because we knew our market. While the majority of the 30,000 or so students in this area are probably into the whole top 40 thing, getting 500 of them out on a regular basis isn't probably that much of a stretch.

any club in a university town is going to work during the school year....its the summer time that is always tough. I don't think Beta will have any problem getting 300-500 people to come out every Friday and Saturday during the school year. I just hope they have a plan for the summer time where your typical toronto type marketing will not work.

you took that quote completely out of context. I didn't say KW didn't have internation DJs coming into the area. I said we never considered it possible to get people from Toronto coming to Kitchener to party.

Universities and colleges have classes year round, they don't operate September to April like when you were that age. And what about the thousands of students who come back to Waterloo for their summer. Do they not go out???

The number of students leaving the area is greater then the number of students coming back and staying. You can look at any of the bars/clubs in KW already and see that the number of students is much smaller. Any good business owner should have other options to bring in money during slow times. I'm sure the owners of Beta are smart enough to have some other source of income during the slow months. There is a fine line for making a profit in the club industry.

I stayed a summer for a summer class one year while at Ottawa U.

Both Carleton and Ottawa U campuses were dead, and the club scene because a tourist scene rather than a student scene.

Does K-to-the-Wizo have another market (like tourism in Ottawa) other than students, to support the summer months? Not sure if it does... but as Ryan explained, there's another clientele he's targeting too during the school year, so I'm sure once summer approaches he's have a plan.

Again to compare with BBR in Windsor. It's always slower in the summer time due to the lack of University students, but it still pulls through.

Only a very small percentage of clubs in a university town can make it through the slow summers long term.

I don't know but I assume BBR finds other ways to bring income in during the summer to help offset the slow times.

Beta appears to be putting in some serious money into renovations and such so depending on how fast they want to recoup the money will affect what decisions they make going forward. If their top 40 night brings in twice as much as their house night...how long will they keep the house night going? I know I wouldn't keep running a night that doesn't make me as much money when I have a lot of debt to recoup.
