See, now you're raising valid points, all of which I can see.
I would go so far as to say it's more like America from the very late 1800's up to the Great Depression - that essentially America is currently powered on a lot of bullshit cookies because its news media is feeding it. Where your point about Germany comes in, however, is that where it was once simple chaos, ignorance and greed, which brought about such a calamity, it's as though the people currently in charge of the media are a little more careful about keeping it in place and granting editorial access to carefully messaged political pundits.
Why? It's the money, my friend. The lunatic fringe, idiot celebrities, and other such pap sells advertising space and CNN would have lost out on its funding had they investigated Countrywide Financial while there was still time to halt a second financial calamity. But if you look at the Yellow Journalism period of American History, the parallels are immediately apparent.
Even the Tea Party parallels early, grass-roots Socialist movements, of the early 1900's. Only, here, it's the Republican party who has taken the reigns and twisted the cause to simply perverted levels. Goebbels would be proud, the way they have messaged contempt for intellectualism as rallying slogans for a populist movement. Where grass-roots could once be measured as a group of people uniting for a common good, it is now a chunk of electoral real-estate consisting of an electorate largely dead, behind the eyes.
And onward we consider the parallels to Chinese Thought Reform and its efficacy employed within the confines of what is ostensibly an open society. Glen Beck amongst the others consisting the white noise of rambling idiocy; an endless succession of non-sequiturs so ignorant that while they disparage George Soros for being behind the velvet revolution in Czechoslovakia, they also chide him for being communist, which is the very nature of the regime the Velvet Revolution over-threw.
In answer to your question, as to why does the insanity of the United States persist so abundantly: Because large segments of the population are simply too fucking stupid and ignorant to have a conversation consisting of anything other than totalitarian-esque thought terminating cliche's. When the argument is reduced to One Big Assed Mistake, America, there's little point in continuing to follow the Roberts Rules of Ordered agenda called for by some Volvo driving, Latte sipping, Arugula eating, egg-head.
Offsetting this, however, we have Anderson Cooper, Fareed Zakaria, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert not to mention a few other vocal proponents of reason. There are still reputable news sources, such as NPR and The New York Times. Do they get enough air-time to make a difference? Hard to say other than submitting that things could be a lot worse. The image of America being portrayed by Fox News Channel is most prominent, in part, because it has the biggest mega-phone. In answer to that, there actually is an increasingly vocal center. It's just taking time.
