It's not an issue it if it's part of someone's culture. Obviously there are different expectations/norms for different people - but if you're plain old North American whitey who should have been taught table manners using forks, knives, and spoons - then you need to use them in somewhat of a refined manner. I fucking hate bad table manners. Eating with people who don't have them can spoil a meal.

Elbows on tables, chewing with one's mouth open or talking with a mouthful of food, holding/using utensils improperly, the scraping thing, loud slurpers and/or gulpers, reaching across the table instead of asking to have something passed along, etc. Fuck.

I have to admit that I still put my elbows on the table, just not while I'm eating. But all of the other stuff I fully agree with...

Italians are brutal for chewing with their mouths open...
