Cocoon (Club and Label) hasn't been insignificant either. As a DJ he might not always been terribly worried about transitions but could do great 10 hours sets (I've caught a few of those myself) that could rival the best

Yes he had a playful/crazy side but that was never the main part of his image IMO and it never felt like it was part of a big marketing strategy that you get with Seth.

Hmm....good points. I feel that Sven's antics ARE a marketing strategy. Sven climbing a telephone pole during a dj performance while wearing a bra and 2 pineapples is fundamentally no different than the Ultimate Warrior threatening to jam the controls of Hulk Hogan "into a nose dive". The purpose of said antics in both cases is to appease the fan base, to entertain them.

Troxler does the same stupid shit for his fans but since his fans are younger, toolier on average, and more tech savvy, I feel it tends to come off as overdone as it spreads across php driven message boards like wildfire (referring to the douchey interview posted above).

P.S. i'm not arguing I'm just talking so I can hear myself talk.

Haha that spectacle is something I've completely missed and to that I have to say I agree. Definitively a bit blatant

Just to add something, Seth does seem to seek out media attention a lot more though. Doing crazy stunts during a performance has a certain degree of entertaining the crowd, which I feel is fine (or at least I can tolerate that to a larger degree). Continuously seeking out visibility in media with crazy statements and antics I have less tolerance for

It definitely works well from a marketing standpoint, since the DJ is a pop star these days, and it definitely has earned him loads more fans and money, but the kind of stunt you just described is just another testament to Sven's eccentric personality, which he has had since day one. You only need to look at the cover art for his first few albums or listen to the way he behaves on his early broadcasts for HR3 to get more examples of this. I don't think people at Cocoon sit around brainstorming for a new catch phrase like "Gude Laune" that Sven can yell into the mic at Time Warp because it'll help sell more mix CDs. It's just the way Sven is, and techno just happens to love its eccentrics (or at least it used to).

Was thinking the same; he's always been eccentric, but nowadays eccentricity and deviant behavior seem to be interpreted as "marketing ploys."

Or perhaps that's what the media makes of it, anyway, and people follow suit. I'm sure there are DJs who put on a show for "marketing" purposes, but let's not confuse personality and impulse with premeditated antics.

I think he's a bit too old and family conscious to be climbing telephone poles these days, but otherwise, it might as well have.

You can definitely make the comparison because Sven was always a "personality" with his daft haircuts and liberal drug use taking precedence over his ability to mix, but Sven is a mammoth figure in the history of German techno with his record labels and influential productions, and he has survived for over 25 years at the top. It's hard to overstate how big an achievement it is to remain at the forefront of the scene for that long. Troxler might yet go on to achieve that, but he could equally fade away as another Brandon Block figure in a few years time.

Yeah! WTF does he think this is? A trance forum or some shit?

Re: Svan - you;re all right that he has been like this since day one. He was always eccentric and always trouble at a party.

With Sven it's part of his persona, with Seth, it's because he's seen someone else do it (prolly Sven) and realized it's a marketing niche.

Oh, and by the way, a lot of Sven's antics are actually because he fucking out of it when he does them, not because he decided to make a spectacle.

Really trying to compare Seth to Sven is like comparing Lewis Hamilton to Schumacher; One has won a few races, and the other is a legend in his time.

Seth will be gone in 10 years time, but I have a feeling we'll still be talking about Sven then....

Most fun I had this past year we're Alex Bau, Pan-Pot, Hot Since 82, Richie Hawtin (out of the 3, 1 was pretty boring, 1 was average and 1 was awesome) & Sven Vath. Therefore those earned my vote..

Paco Osuna, Daniel Avery, Cari Lekebusch, Marcel Dettmann, Luciano, Gary Beck, Marco Carola, Deetron, Oliver Koletzki, Steffi, Norman Nodge, Joris Voorn, Gerd Janson we're also all very great sets/parties.
