Not really. The programming is similar to the original 909/808, and it is definitely handy for production, as well. Nina Kraviz, among others, uses it solely for production. You can sync it with the JDXI and use both. It's all a matter of wanting to actually produce a track. If you don't have the desire, you obviously won't do it.

If you use the TR-8 with a DAW (e.g. Ableton), you can assign each instrument to an individual channel, so it becomes more flexible still. I personally have been using it OTB, and mostly only for the kick - for percussion I use a 606 - they work together pretty well.

I'll say this again, though - if you want to actually finish a track, you will. If you don't, you won't. Doesn't mean you have to look for excuses, however, to justify not finishing a track.

my main problem is the DAW... and external hardware integration.

FL is giving me crap while trying to record MIDI. been meaning to trying a new DAW and reason is at the top of my list. it seems the most fun and straightforward.

that or cubase... the full educational version can be bagged for half price

actually, with the JDXI, even though all the drums are on 'one track' on the synth itself, when painted into the DAW all the instruments are represented individually... so that's good. and with the JDXI you can layer drum sounds live, plus also you have the built in arp to use. this is why i feel the TR8 is more of a performance instrument.

I don't see how what you wrote makes the TR-8 more of a performance instrument, but regardless - the original 909/808 were convenient for both live pas and in-home/in-the-studio production. Same goes for the TR-8.

That said, if you can individually sequence the percussion of the JDXI in a DAW, then you don't really need the TR-8, as DAW integration would allow you to do the same thing with both machines.

Guys, stay away from Cubase. Go with Ableton.

the faders primarily make the TR8 more a live instrument (compared to the JDXI anyway) surely if you were programming in a DAW, you would use automation anyway.

Cubase is the most anti-electronic music daw there is. I understood that too late. Ableton is the most friendly towards us.

after trying it, and most other DAWs, i have to conclude FL is for me. it's the only DAW i can understand intuitively. it has its roots in simplicity after all, so i will try figure out its intricacies also.

i tried ableton before and my brain went into meltdown

i notice the FL tracks are brighter and fuller, where as JDXI are dull and muffled

looking into buying a decent soft synth, and just using the JDXI as a controller.

going to flesh "FL2" out into a track. done it solely inside FL, with the base plugs-ins and samples. much more harder work than the JDXI, but finally got somewhere in the end with lots of tweaking. pretty satisfying.
