Update on my saga:
What a fucking nightmare.
So my old asus laptop that i had done a fresh install of W10(as a first test before installing it on my new Lenove) developed a fatal boot sector issue to the point even a repair would not work.
So this time, as it was un activated, i deceide to do it legit, and convert the old W7 Home license I have for it to a legit full W10 install.
Firstly, the only way they let you upgrade is to use the original OEM disks from your manufacturer as it was preinstalled by ASUS. These are virtually impossible to get now as ASUS don't keep stock of the older windows installations.
Fuck.
Anyway, after a ton of research, I found out that the Dell OEM W7 disksare virtually identical to the ASUS and some kind chap had uploaded them to TPB.
Gave it a shot and thankfully it worked. Now I had to update. It needed 8 rounds of updates to get W7 to the point it was fully updated and then I'd be allowed to do the W10 update.
Took about 4 hours in total to update (on a 300mbit connection) and then thanks to the nice people at reddit, they have a nifty little script that forces an immediate upgrade,
So then, did the upgrade which was done in under 20mins, but it's done it automatically to 32bit windows. That's fine though as I'm going to wipe it and do a fresh install to w10.
So I activate it all fine, then create the USB media (an really straightforward and excellent feature of W10) on a USB 3 drive.
Took a screen shot of the activation page just in case, then started the wipe and fresh install with my USB drive.
FUCK.
So older laptops (anything 2012 or earlier do not have native USB support.
So now I have to do this long winded command line thing where it copies the contents of the USB drive to my internal SSD, and then change the bios to boot from the SSD instad of the USB.
Install finally gets going, I go to activate and: Invalid Product key.
WHAT THE FUCK.
It just won't validate my properly upgraded key.
I'm fucked.
So I find Microsoft activation chat support (which is like trying to find a virgin in a brothel) but jump through their maze of pages, and very quickly get chatting to a guy in india.
It takes a good 15 mins to explain the situation, and he then tells me that it turns out, when i was making the USB media, I chose Windows 10 Pro N, and the N version is only for certain territories, NOT including the USA.
Thankfully this guy is really on it and within 5 mins, had spoken to a supervisor and got my key upgraded to the Pro N version.
He takes remote control of my laptop and within 1 minute I'm all upgraded.
All in all, it took two days to do this but at least M$ support is pretty fucking sharp, even if the legit upgrade process is convoluted.
I now have to do this to me Lenovo laptop. I tried using a portable USB stick version of 8.1 but the speed is so slow I can't even work with it.
Looks like I'm going to have to get a cheap HDD with 8.1 on it then swap out to authenticate my w10.
