GLOW's sound system
Hey guys... this was posted recently on GLOW's forum coming from Pete Moutso (weekly resident dj and music director at GLOW). He talks about the sound system, it's specs, and how they're workin to fix some of the probs.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, I hear your needs and I understand completely. Just to give you a brief background...we own the whole light, sound system and dj booth at insomnia. Last year when we moved the Glow party from Zei club to Insomnia we realized that changes had to be made at Insomnia. To be fair, at the time, the new owners of the venue did not have the funds to do this. So, we knew that we had to take a big risk and invest our own money to make Glow what we wanted it to be. The first thing was get a completely new sound system. I am not exaggerating when I tell you that the original system was maybe 6 mids/highs and maybe 4 sub cabinets. We had arguably the best speaker manufacturers, EAW (Eastern Acoustical Works…the same guys who make Avalon and the mids/highs of Phazon) come to Insomnia and measure the main room and recommend to us what sound to get. In other words, what you see in the main room is a custom built sound system. I made it clear that I wanted more sound/power than we needed in order to have no compression and to be able to support live bands and anything that the room would ever need. What did they make me? An awesome 42,000 (continuous) EAW sound system. To give you an idea about its power…when you hear it full blast on Saturday’s…the system is only running at ¼ of its capabilities. We did this because; we would rather spend a lot of money up front for a great sound system…and not have to worry about blowing speakers and amps every week. And to say the sound system runs on one amp is totally absurd! This is 2002, and the days of having a designated room with fans, cooling units and 30 amps are over. Our sound system has 16 mid/high speakers all around the room to give it a surround effect and they all have built in amps. We have two 11,000 watt QSC amps running 8 double 18” sub cabinets. Everything is running on digital processing. The beauty of this system is that it has so much headroom, that it is pretty difficult to blow anything.
The problem with the main room is that it is all concrete. I’m sorry, but as promoters (not club owners) we don’t have 200,000 lying around to buy a hardwood floor, or spend 40,000 to spray the ceiling with acoustical foam. So, we did what EAW recommended and placed 16 speakers around the room to give it a warmer feel and surround sound. So, the sound system is not a problem, we did not go ‘cheap’ on it and I am not ashamed of saying that we as promoters went above and beyond what we should do. Do I wish I was at a venue with hardwood floors and new everything? Yes I do! It would be great to just show up, throw a party, and go home at the end of the day instead of worrying about, sound, lights, maintenance…etc. But we are not, so we make the best of what we have.
Another problem at Insomnia was their DJ booth. It is located on a balcony (where our light jockey is located). What’s the point of bringing the best djs…if nobody can see them (this is the biggest problem I had at Zei)? So we custom built the Glow DJ booth. Every guest dj LOVES the booth. Instead of dj’s being ‘gods’ in some high far away, vip booth…they are on the same level with you. As I had hoped, the DJ-Crowd interaction has been incredible, leading to some great dj sets (In the new DJMag Top 100 issue, #9 Glow Resident Ferry Corsten said that his ‘gig of 2002’ was Glow!). I can’t wait to see PvD in an intimate room like Glow’s in December!
Insomnia originally had 6 intelligent lights. Now it has an amazing 36 Coemar lighting fixtures, two lasers and three projectors all purchased by us.
For the last month I have not been happy with our sound system. I am not going to say it sounds like crap, because I still think its one of the best, but I think it should sound better. So, a month ago I arranged to have one of the best sound guys in the US, Bob Linkas, come and ‘tweak/EQ’ the system. This will be done NEXT week. Thanks for your concerns, but I just wanted to state the record that we are not sitting on our asses, being greedy promoters ;-)
