It's not you, North American-style coffee is indeed very confusing. In Brazil it used to be very simple: milk was optional, third-degree burns and diabetes were obligatory

Then hipsters made it difficult for everyone.

What is North American style coffee?

As far as I know how to differentiate coffee it comes down to brewing method. I would never think of what "North American" style could mean, unless you meant basic drip brewing.

Don't feel too bad about it. I have a friend who can't figure Subway out, so when ever we go to one, someone else has to order for him. You know how to order at a Subway, right?

I don't know what else to call it, but by that I mean coffee from chains like Starbucks and such, with a wide variety of drinks that would put most cafés to shame.

Jokes aside (I don't really find them that confusing, and I've come to pretty much run on Dunkin'), I see why the first couple of visits can be a bit overwhelming: it's still standard in Brazil to just choose how much milk you want (strong dripped coffee with sugar being the default), and fancy places would just have an espresso machine. It's not unusual to see someone unwittingly holding the queue because they're getting to know the menu

Personally, I still feel like a kid in a candy shop in one of these places because I vividly remember the first time I had iced coffee, as I was already in my late twenties. The first local Starbucks knock-offs started sprouting just last decade, with the real thing arriving in Brasilia only last year (Dunkin' arriving just two or three years earlier).

Can't judge you here. I take my mocha with mint liquor.

That sounds tasty af. I also like to froth Irish Cream liqueur in place of milk.

My husband used to be intimated by the Starbucks menu too, but then I bought an espresso machine for home, plus a nice high end bean grinder. Now he prefers espresso based drinks too, and can order any type of coffee anywhere lol.
