Good call!

Import two or three beaters and assemble one "chosen one" and register it as a kit car

Yeds. It's a shame that they changed the rules before the Speed12 got a fair crack in competition

Well, I was more suggesting a VIN swap if they used them there. Just bring it in as parts (to be able to do that in the US the wheels and motor have to be removed and shipped separately) and then just reassemble it with a beat up ones serial/vin.

Ahh, my bad. I misunderstood.

The first EVO (Evo VI) imported into Ontario came in after being disassembled in the US, put in boxes, and reassembled at a shop in Georgetown and licensed as a kit car.

I figured Mongoose could maybe pull the same stunt

This isn't so easy in the US anymore. Those Skyline GT-Rs that went through this (there were like 3 or 4 of them) got impounded till they went through the proper channels. This was before the DOT ban on R34 and R33 Skylines.

lol basically. They were so eager to get them in, they would do anything to do it quasi-legally.

Also, the reason the R33 and R34 are now banned, is because Motorex was the only one that paid for FMVSS and DOT type testing. As a result, no other company had test results. So when Motorex was forging documents and falsely converting R34s, they just outright banned them. Sucks, but what can you do.

Ahh! Motorex!! I was hunting for the name but couldn't remember it. Now I remember the drama.

Damn. Oh well, good times while they lasted I guess.

Sadly, most of the loopholes have been closed a few years back. Partly due to the ease of imports from nearby countries, but mostly due to the sudden emergence of illegal street racing (another reason besides crimes against aesthetics to blame on the fast and furious movies) so faking anything on a car these days just isn't worth the effort, especially if the car in question is as high profile and rarity as a mint condition 5 series v8. There are plenty of old 5ers driving around, but most of them look like shit, so the ones that look decent are immediately suspicious and are often checked for illegal mods.

Great article!

I love dodgy shit like this, though I would never go near it myself.
