This is probably a bit of a ridiculous question that will perhaps (read: hopefully) illicit some pretty ridiculous responses (I'm open to being mocked), but I'm being faced with a challenge I've been putting off for a long time, and I'm not sure I'm smart enough to do it the way I want to.

Long story short, I've officially become employed by/joined up with a DJ/Artist Management group in Chicago that I've worked with a bit for the last year. Now they need an "official" bio and some press photo's, which I've traditionally kind of taken the proverbial piss with. What I need are any random suggestions you guys can give me so that:

A. I don't have just another self-righteous and typical DJ bio. Phrases I'm hoping to avoid are things like "From a young age" and "becoming immersed in." I want it to be fun, but still professional, and I don't think I'm smart enough to write anything like that.

2. I don't have typical faggy DJ promo pictures. I realize this is a bit of a stretch, since pretty much all DJ promo pictures are faggy DJ promo pictures, but if anyone has any advice with regard to how to avoid it - I'd appreciate it.

So yeah, help please. Or not. Either way really.

invest in a professionally done press kit and it will really make a difference.

i'll photochop you a sweet promo pictar if you want. there's some pretty great ones of you spinning... if you want, i can help you go through some of those this weekend and tell you which one i think is the sexiest, and if it needs any altering/cropping in Photoshop.

Fuck man - this is the stuff I just don't know that much about, or even where to start.

I do have a close friend who's in PR for a record label though, so I guess I could ask him for some ideas where to start.

I do need to have at least one "promo" picture done though (of me not playing), so I was going to have Drew help me out with that. I just don't even know where to begin, and I don't want to have something that's ultra gay and pretentious.

If I'm going to do this stuff, I want it to represent me - not be ultra generic.

the pr guy is a great start, and look for professional photogs who have experience with dj's as clients. Trust me when i say professional pics for flyers (gay looking or not) go a long way towards marketing yourself. Never forget that the packaging unfortunately can be more in demand than a product itself.

I guess this is kind of what I was thinking, and if these guys are going to put some money behind me, I'd rather not half ass it.

totally. there's enough generic promo photos/bios out there already. i'm sure if you/me/Drew/whoever else put our minds together, we can come up with a cool idea for a promo shot.

also, a good start might be to read bios of other DJs on discogs/myspace/etc just to get some ideas. you don't necessarily have to copy those or even use any of the same ideas/formats, but it definitely helps to see what else is out there.
