Ok a few things - IMO Oakenfolds mixing has never really been anything special, but his track selection (especially older stuff) was (and still is) unbeatable.

The thing a lot of you dont understand about Oakenfold is that he didnt really start out spinning trance, and thats not HIS favourite type of music. Bunkka is the sound he likes (but a lot of us dont), he didnt make it with anyone but himself in mind, if you like it too, good. Oakenfold has ventured into almost every style of electronic music at one point or another, so why hate a guy for being versatile?

His mixing skills are not that good technically, his mixes are usually really short, or mixes breakdowns. Not really that impressive.

oakenfold has the best looking traklisting than any other dj IMO

01. Robbie Rivera - Rivera's Grooves
02. Garbage - Stupid Girl (Leama and Moor Bootleg Mix)
03. Sonorous - Second Sun (Leama and Moor Remix)
04. Justin Timberlake - Cry Me A River (Bill Hamel Justenough Vocal Mix)
05. Sonorous - Second Sun (Leama and Moor Remix)
06. Tori Amos - Dont Make Me Come To Vegas (Timo on Tori Breaks Remix)
07. Cultivate - Broken Pieces (Max Grahams Third Street Remix)
08. Missionary - Imperpetuum Mobila (Kick Start Big Drop Mix)
09. Nalin & Kane - Beachball (Gabriel & Dresden South Beach Vacation Remix)
10. Oakenfold Featuring Tiff Lacey - Hypnotised (Kowalski Remix)
11. Oliver Lieb - Untitled
12. Patient Saints - Til Your Heart Is Mine
13. Insigma - Open Your Eyes (Liquid Life Remix)

this list looks horrible, why does he play these tracks like cry me a river.

but, i saw him live this summer at amnesia and he is for real!! and instead of "cry me a river" he played u2 where the streets have no name which is a far better choice imo.

I heard that when he played "Cry me a River" and it wasnt that bad. I never really liked the song, but his mix was half way decent.

I saw oakenfold in houston on halloween and compared to tiesto his selection was lacking. In the middle of his set he played a benny benassi megamix and maybe one song out of his entire set was new to me. I was looking forward to some new choons to find but i already had them all. Maybe he just thinks we're that behind on the music? Either way i went to give him the thumbs up and he wouldn't even recognize me or anyone else in the club. Tiesto would come shake your hand, say hi, and he even dropped Traffic when some of the TA's put up a sign(so i was told). Thats what makes a DJ, crowd interaction. Oakenfold was gonna play whatever he decided before he even got there. And he was gonna be a dick cause he already got his money. Oakie, I WANT MY 25 DOLLARS BACK!!!

what do you think is a good DJ? A DJ who play the tunes which he think is the best for the mix at the moment, or a DJ who play what some other say to him?

Btw, I saw Tiesto 5 times, 3 times he was really cool to the crowd, and 2 times he didn't give any sign (p.e. in Lloret, he came in the VIP area, and then he left with Cor Fijneman this area to a closed area, spoke there with him, then he played his set. After his set, he went in a car with his girlfriend and left the place. Then in Lausanne, the attendant from Tiesto didn't let us go to Tiesto who was standing alone in the club. Then the attendant asked a girl something, and the nice girl went to Tiesto, spoke with him and then they leave together. Tiesto ALONE with this girl.

Ok, this is not a Tiesto thread, when I saw Oakenfold in Lausanne, he played great. What do you think, do you think that everyone is a Tranceaddict and knows the latest music? Here in Switzerland which has 6 millions of residents, I saw just about 10 registered TAs. So the music which Oakey was playing, was for all absolutely new, except me. Mixing was great and the track selection also. After his gig, he was drinking a few drinks, spoke with Miss Switzerland. I gave him a record to sign, he wrote "Ben, hello, Oakey", gave me the hand. Then he made a pic from me with my camera and after this I could make a pic with him together. So I dunno, maybe he don't like America when he's a dick to the crowd there?

I remember when Oakenfold came to play for the first time ever in Salt Lake City. After the show he seemed pretty pissed about something, but he still took the time to sign a couple of autographs.

Unfortunately, those autographs were only given to people who shelled out a couple of dollars extra to get VIP tickets.

Luckily I thought ahead and chased the bastard down to the airport.

I eventually got my CD signed by him, though he was still in a pissy mood about something.

Still, when I thanked him for the signature he gave me a sincere, "no problem."

Of course, Pronti and Kalmani were still the funnest deejays I've ever hung out with. Those guys are hillarious.

Anyway, the above annecdote doesn't really apply to the discussion at hand.

So, I'll throw in these last couple of words.

Oakenfold started moving into other aspects of the music industry (soundtracks, more poppish sounding EDM) and I believe his DJing career took a dive because of it. Then again his career might just be a reflection of the trance scene in general.

I agree with Shauny. I saw Oakenfold at the Guvernment in TO this past November. He played a short 2 hour set, grabbed his cash and left. Played nothing for the crowd or anything. Actually to tell you the truth, I left his set to go watch Mauro and Sven Vath next door at the Kool Haus. All and all, I was pretty disappointed.
