Last year, BPMTV here in Canada did a documentary on this topic...they interviewed some more prominent female DJs (Barbara and DJ Heather come to mind) and explored different attitudes towards women in the music field, both as DJs and producers.

I taped the last half, but I may try to get a copy of the full program...very interesting.

The worst part about the industry is that women get paid much, much less than men - although this happens in every industry, it happens much more in the music industry. One of the female DJs they interviewed estimated that women get paid as little as one fifth of what their male counterparts do.

That's odd, as I was told that Misstress Barbara is a very expensive DJ, and that's why she doesn't visit the States too often..... but I could be wrong, it was just hearsay.

Ah hell, why is rock music mostly male dominated? Of course there are female rock stars, but rock is a much easier scene to break into so there's going to be more variation.

Music in general is more male dominated, look back at all the great composers- Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven- all men. All the biggest selling music artists in general, whether its Elvis, Queen, Bob frickin' Geldof, all men.

As for listeners, I don't have a clue as I'm male, but lots of my female friends listen to dance music.

Your historical examples are just a demonstration that society has been sexist for the last couple millenia. They don't address the issue at hand. Does the status quo have sexist barriers? I don't buy that there's some genetic programming that makes girls like trance less.

She is, but not nearly as much so as her comparable male counterparts.

NO...the other ppl, I know you know your music history Sarah. Seems no one realizes that the dance music industry is a high barrier industry anyway. It's all about opinions anyway....tho from what I've read with interviews with A list deejays...they say it is tough. What they forget to tell you tho is the very high divorce rate among deejays....because a list deejays tend to give their lives to the scene. Oh and as my mother once told me...behind every goood man, there is an even better woman.

PVD is totally overrated. and to answer one of your earlier posts, if all your friends want to do is sit around listening to boring music not doing anything then yes, you definitely need some new friends. Find out about trance/dance events in your area and just go... it's so easy especially for girls to just meet tons of new people and among them will have to be somebody worth making friends with. that's how it starts.. next thing you know you've got a gigantic grounp of friends who are fun to hang out with and love the same music (and probably other things too) as you

Aaaaa shieeet. Hope Scottaculous doesn't read this..I'm running out of OWNED jpegs.

p.s. I actually like that trance is liked by a small elite group; I don't know how I would react if it was broadcast on say 95.5 or q100 on weekends...theres something about the masses listening to the same cool music I like that turns my stomach..
