The point is your not using original vinyl for each song (which was specified in the thread), in other words your using your computer with wave files and only one piece of vinyl (Vinyl Scratch) on each table to cue your track, which isn't the same thing as mixing vinyl. You may beat match the same way but is still not what real DJing is all about. What would happen if you were in a venue with thousands of people or even a club with less, and suddenly, (OH HOLY HELL MY PC CRASHED), you would be screwed. A real DJ wouldn't have that problem, and that is what this contest was about. Real DJ's using real equipement, not computers with wave files or mp3's. THATS THE POINT, GET IT!!! It's not the same thing.

DJ's didn't evolve from computers. Computer DJ'ing evolved from the original DJs. And just my personal note THAT PISSES ME OFF!!!

I would love to list the many DJs who use Final Scratch, but let me just mention PvD, Josh Wink, Chris Lawrence. You're right these guys arent "real" Djs. I am aginst using the product for MP3 mixing (especially dled MP3s), but if you actually bought the vinyl and recorded it to your laptop...why can't you use it? IMO its much more convenient than taking a stack of records around. I've seen PvD 3 times now and his sets (using FS) have never crashed. On the rare occasion there is a system crash you can always switch over to regular vinyl or cd mixing (hence its a good idea to have maybe a CD of tracks or 2-3 vinyls extra). And it is just like vinyl mixing. The only difference is you're not physically taking vinyls off the tables you're just taking that time to assign tracks to the different decks.

I understand your point of view as well. Many people are not eager to accept new technologies. 4-5 years ago everyone looked down upon CD decks, but now almost every top DJ uses CDs in their sets. I think the same is true w/ FS and other emerging technologies.

Cool

personally if i had the time + money i would rip my whole collection to aiff, buy a laptop and install linux and run FS, but i don't have the time and can't afford it. it would be much more time efficient and i could stick a lot of my collection in the loft, and burn the essential tunes onto cdr incase there was a mishap.

less bitching please

I don't see anything wrong in Final Scratch, PVD used it and nobody at the club said : "This dj sucks, we're going home." Everybody I talked to was rather exited about him using it. I think because of human nature evolution will effect every aspect of our lifes so the music, dj'ing or mediums we use to play the music will evolve too and as long as you don't do anything illegal and you love what you do I don't see anything wrong in dj'ing with final scratch. Example: I noticed more and more clubs have only cd decks and they are packed every weekend and nobody on the dance floor is complaining about the lack of vinyl... well, unless a rather larger girl is wearing it

OPINIONS!!!

Fair Enough,

But that is my opinion, I don't like final scratch. I have seen it used and messed around with it myself. To me it takes away from the art, but that is my opinion, plus I dont put that much faith in computers, yes it is more convenient but then again there is nothing like flipping thru a stack of vinyl and looking for the next song to me. Everyone is entitled to their own, I wasnt bitching just expressing my opinion. Some will agree others will not, no need getting in an uproar about it. However, if people would read the beginning of the forums they wouldn't have to ask stupid questions.

final scratch is an acceptable format for this comp anyway

+ all songs begin life as aiff/wave files

My apologies then to all I may have upset with my comments about the format and final scratch. However, I personally prefer single vinyl tracks or CD's over FINAL SCRATCH. Vinyl singles is much more fun for me and CD's are my next favorite. Dont get me wrong, I love computers and think they are great for many things, but when it comes to DJing I think they are best used for recording and editting devices not for actually playing the music. This again is my opinion and by no means anything more.

I agree with you totally on this, I subscribe to several CD pools where I get promos before they are released. Fresh, new music is always a good choice. I like playing CD's just as much as vinyl, and its actually easier for me to keep CD's on beat than vinyl, but there is an aura about spinning vinyl that keeps me hooked. It has something that all other medias lack. WARMTH!!! Its hard to explain, but analog has something that digital lacks.

I agree, vinyl gives you the control that cds or mp3s/wave files cannot and I will always prefer them.

I'm all for new technology anything that can get fresh stuff out is always good, but don't forget yr roots.

Also the thread said at the start cd's and 12" vinyl only no mention of wave files or final scratch ?

That is the point I made in an earlier comment on this thread, however LUKE TERRY pointed out that it is an acceptable format. Perhaps in the future wave formats and alternate methods like Final Scratch need to be included in the format listing so there isn't any misunderstandings. It was my understanding also as I read the beginning of the thread that is was just to be 12 Inch vinyl and CD's. Just a little recommendation for future competitions, include all acceptable formats so there won't be any confusion.
