I dont mean to be disrespectful, but clarify something for me. Didnt the troops go off to europe to fight the germans, where the germans wanted to take over europe? Doesnt that not qualify fighting for our freedoms, but rather fighting for the freedom of europe? Isnt that like saying the Americans took down saddam to liberate our freedoms, where our is the world freedom. I never really paid attention in social studies, bleh, someone explain how this relates to OUR freedom in north america?

your the biggest fuckin idiot I know for saying something like that!!

The difference between then and now, is that from 1939-1945 it really was an attack on freedom. Thosuands of innocent brittish, french, russian, polish..... were slaughtered in their own homes by the nazi's. Don't forget it wasn't until america was attacked directly that it became involved in ww2.

France never made a decision to go to war, war made a decision to go to france.

hitler wanted world domination, he wanted nazi's to be THE supreme race. he would not have stopped in europe, that was just among his first conquest. don't forget he tried to go as far as africa during the war...

as for the thread, i salute the veterans of the war. there is no way to fathom how things would have been different if the invasion into northern france was not attempted and completed, despite the MASSIVE loss of life by allied forces. everytime i see my grandfather i ask him about the war, he has so many stories. he was not invovled in d-day, but he was a coastal artillery man stationed on the shores of hawaii to guard from attacks from the west (japan).

the men who fought in the war back then were a different breed of person, its hard to imagine how much guts and pride they had... riding an LC headed for omaha beach knowing that as soon as those gates opened up the germans would shower you with heavy machine gun fire from what was (not known to the soldiers at the time) one of the most fortified fighting position the germans had set up along the entire shore of france. that coupled with the fact that they had artillery positions set up a couple miles inland zero'd on that stretch of shore. the destruction and death on that beach must have been unimaginable. that was only the spearhead of the invasion too, do not forget the 101st airborne who was dropped (in one of the first ever air assault operations) behind the germans lines to take out the artillery that was hitting the beach and clear the way for the 29th ID's landing, which had already suffered heavy (70%-80%) casualties. watch the opening scenes of "saving private ryan" if you don't know what i am talking about. these men are heroes.

if we britain, america and the other allies didn't invade normandy and start to retake europe, many of us would prolly be speaking Russian.
Hitler really wanted Russia. He thought of the slavs as one of the major inferior races and wanted to wipe them out. Hitler wasn't as opposed to the British because the british and the germans were more closely related by race. the number of germans that died on the eastern front was much higher than on the western. Lucky for us Hitler's lunacy was also his downfall. If he had listened to his generals, the war would have been even more brutal for the western powers.

anyway this is all speculation. what ifs and could ofs.
i do like to speculate on what would have happend if the Germans won WW1. Hitler would have probably never came to power.
Its kinda sad how many people forget about the first world war which was probably one of the lowest points in human civilization. ww2 was atleast a just war, probably the only just war in human history since there is no doubting Hitler was an evil man and a menace to the world. But WW1 was all about greed and ignorance on BOTH sides.
