hitler wanted world domination, he wanted nazi's to be THE supreme race. he would not have stopped in europe, that was just among his first conquest. don't forget he tried to go as far as africa during the war...
as for the thread, i salute the veterans of the war. there is no way to fathom how things would have been different if the invasion into northern france was not attempted and completed, despite the MASSIVE loss of life by allied forces. everytime i see my grandfather i ask him about the war, he has so many stories. he was not invovled in d-day, but he was a coastal artillery man stationed on the shores of hawaii to guard from attacks from the west (japan).
the men who fought in the war back then were a different breed of person, its hard to imagine how much guts and pride they had... riding an LC headed for omaha beach knowing that as soon as those gates opened up the germans would shower you with heavy machine gun fire from what was (not known to the soldiers at the time) one of the most fortified fighting position the germans had set up along the entire shore of france. that coupled with the fact that they had artillery positions set up a couple miles inland zero'd on that stretch of shore. the destruction and death on that beach must have been unimaginable. that was only the spearhead of the invasion too, do not forget the 101st airborne who was dropped (in one of the first ever air assault operations) behind the germans lines to take out the artillery that was hitting the beach and clear the way for the 29th ID's landing, which had already suffered heavy (70%-80%) casualties. watch the opening scenes of "saving private ryan" if you don't know what i am talking about. these men are heroes.
