I have a classic CD mixed by Acosta around 1999 called Members of X. It's all low-profile domestic US artists, but one of the slickest club-trance compilations I own. I'd never heard of Acosta before, and liked his sound:
Members of X
01. George Acosta - Intro
02. T.O.T. - Sweet Angel
03. Plus 3 - Voice
04. George Acosta and Friends - DJ's on X
05. Undertaker - Members of X
06. George Acosta pres. Lara B. - I Wanna Fly
07. Fever Express - Fever '99
08. Newcleus - Jam on It '99
09. George Acosta pres. Lara B. - I Wanna Fly [Remix]
10. Liquid Zone feat. Cee-vox - Reach up High
Naturally, I was interested when I heard he was releasing another compilation in 2000. Unfortunately, Awake was a huge departure from his previous style of American club/trance, opting instead for an aimless blend of tired, old eurotrance cuts:
01 Ayla - Angelfalls (Elemental Force)
02 Stray Dog - Mirror (Signum Mix)
03 DJ Ufuk - R2D2 (DJ Ufuk Remix)
04 Absolom - The Air (Prophecy Mix)
05 Airscape - L'Esperanza (Svenson Goes to the Loveparade Mix)
06 Gouryella - Gouryella
07 Solar Impact - Der Schwarze Monolith
08 Green Court - Follow Me (Cosmic Gate Mix)
09 Fragma - Toca Me (Inpetto Remix)
10 Lange - I Believe (Lange Mix)
11 DJ Taucher - Child of the Universe
12 ATB - Don't Stop
13 Liquid Child - Diving Faces (Club Mix)
14 Nova - Welcome to the Future
Given Members of X, I decided that it must have been a career misstep. After all, it was right around 2000 that all the cheesier elements of the 98-99 trance boom began to filter into America. Perhaps Acosta had simply gotten caught in the momentum of substandard European exports, at a time when even mainstream radio was playing Better Off Alone.
Alas, Acosta did it again with Next Level. And again with Touched. And again with Miami. I finally condeded that the guy must be churning out compilations of no artistic integrity for profit alone.
What I've heard about his personality seems to corroborate this image, chronic rumors of his arrogance and desire for fame. This thread has a good collection of posts. Here are two devastating quotes:
Just look at his body language when he DJs. You can tell it's not about the music or the atmosphere for him. Too many god poses for me. I simply can't appreciate someone who doesn't carry integrity in the music he plays and who doesn't seem to put the music first.
The music always comes first. I sort of cringed when people with mics started chanting "Paul van Dyk" at the end of Paul's set. That's just totally against the spirit of this culture. It's about the experience, not the person at the decks. I appreciate Paul van Dyk as a DJ because he mixes beautifully, focuses on his set, and is modest in doing so. Not because I want to blindly worship a media idol. In this context, George Acosta represents what I don't like about the commercialization of DJ culture. Instead of taking the attention with quiet gratitude, he seems to revel in it and grasp for more. |
good post at least you back up your arguements with solid points and your own point of view. like i said before, im not argueing that he is piece of shit for a human being and should win the humanitarian of the year award, but i used to like his older dj style, and have seen him a time or two over the past few years and have walked away not impressed but not dissapointed either, he's still better than your regular joe resident . and he does play his fair share of cheese but every dj plays cheese and to brand him like that all the time is simply disingenous.

i have to get this off my chest... no offense to you guys who dont like acosta, but why all the hate?! because he's fat? and all this bullshit about him spinning cheese, define CHEESE. the shit 93.1 plays on there rotation is CHEESE. but every dj plays songs that might be classified as cheese not just acosta. and most of you that pass judgement on the poor man have never even been to a liveset of his before this sunday. WHAT the hell is that all about? thats like these harvard professors teaching MBA classes but that have never actually worked for a corporation(wheres the EXPERIENCE, in other words?!) it just seems cool to people nowadays to say "GEORGE IS FAT AND SPINS CHEESE" like all you other annoying assholes who go around parroting chappelles "IM RICK JAMES BITCH", jesus christ, say something original! now im not a huge fan of the man, but ive seen a couple of livesets of his and i tell you what the guy can put on a good set, he may not be a pvd or tiesto, but he knows how to feel a crowd, imho. and back in the late ninties, early millenia, the guy used to spin some of the best hard trance ive ever heard. i think when he changed his style from that thats when he started to slip a bit in my eyes, but thats besides the point. but for real, i love most of you guys in this forum, but sometimes some of the critisisms are totally wanker and brainless, and utterly unstubstantiated. sorry i had to get that off my chest, im not trying to start shit, take it how you like, i just sick of all the acosta bashing, if your so good why arent you up there? you know what i mean.. peace, sorry to get off topic! |
I f*cking love when you post.
And i Like Acosta and his style
But ON topic, im glad you all had fun for the markus and pvd part of the show, wish i could have made it but i had work. Pvd at Summerstage and Spirit owned my ass though, man. Good stuff.
