I don't think marriage started as a western practice either

I plan never to get married, or have kids. But, if I did marry I would be opposed to having my wife take my last name - marriage doesn't strip a woman of her identity, history or heritage, nor does it make her an adjunct of her husband or a piece of property. If I did have children I wouldn't feel strongly about whose name they had; it could alternate, or maybe we could arm-wrestle for it...

I share the same view, though I do realize that one day I will marry - just not anytime soon - my future wife can keep her name without any problem. I'm all for the arm-wrestling idea to figure out how the kids end up .

Just because I changed my last name doesn't change anything about my family or where I've come from....and it doesn't mean he "owns" me
(although he might like to think so.....

We've started a new life together...and will one day have our own family together...with the same last name...

....i dunno..maybe i'm just old school...but that was my choice

(and andrea.....i'm sure we could come up with some last name that's worse than yours!!)

It's in a sociology text book from a class i took un 3rd year undergrad, there's an enture chapter on it, next time i go to my parents i can dig up the source for you if you are really interested in learning more- it's actually pretty interesting.The chapter was extremely interesting in that it talked about how the damily dynamic was historically not a nuturing unit, children dressed as mini-adults and were treated as such, there wasn't a lot of doting and such. If you contrast this w/ native culture, the ppl were more affectionate. the functioned as tribes rather than families, they didn't care about paternity b/c the whole group raised all the tribe's children and native didn't think about things in terms of ownership of property and land.

aaaah........ university sociology classes. A completely non-biased, apolitical way to learn about society.....
