too short. i actually caught sasha/jz at crobar in nyc last friday, and it made such a huge impression on me (i had a pretty crazy depressing week, and really needed it!) that i scraped up some money to take a road trip to montreal to see them again. when i found out (at the club!!) that sasha cancelled, i was really disappointed, since the chemistry between those guys is unbelievable...
but james is the fucking man, and it's sad that i'm reading stuff like "he's no sasha".. that's the whole point, each dj has their own identity and style and sound and the fact that he does his own thing is why he rocks!!!!
anyway, he ripped it up and it was definitely worth the 12 hours of driving... he started playing around 10:30 and was building it up nicely with deep tech house.. the club was pretty empty at that point, and the atmospheric bleepiness was perfect for the setting-- not too chill or overbearing. his mixing was of course, on point as usual but he wasn't really doing anything crazy jsut yet. the place started filling up around 11:30-12 and people started dancing...
he threw down some more acid-y basslines and funky beats, and totally banged out some crazy breaks for most of the last hour... it was hot!! he knows how to work the crowd with sampling, looping & fx.... he just drops in basslines and vocals out of nowhere. sick!!
he played a remix of papua new guinea, galvanize, 'get kinky' (plump djs), and his new track- don't know what it's called but it is fucking -- really tight electro-flavored stuff..
anyway, i was pretty bummed that he only played for 3 hours, but it was still an awesome time. it was my first time partying in montreal & i met so many friendly people..
talked to james for a hot minute & he was giving me awesome tips for the efx 500
sorry this review was kinda scattered, but i just got back and i neeeed sleep.... |
