Embarassing.

The announcement came the same week that the country's biggest wireless carriers revealed they will introduce portable wireless numbers in 2007, longer than some industry players and observers expected.

Virgin's Branson calls Canada's delay on number portability 'unacceptable'

Canadian Press

Friday, September 16, 2005

TORONTO - The founder of Virgin Mobile Canada has criticized the two-year delay on cellphone number portability as "unacceptable."

The comments by Richard Branson, who is also chairman of the British-based Virgin Group, came three days after the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association said it will be two years before cellphone users are able to keep their phone number when switching service providers.

The association said Monday that the country's major wireless carriers - Bell Mobility, Rogers Wireless and Telus Mobility - plan to jointly introduce number portability in September 2007, following a short service trial.

Branson said Friday he was on a personal mission to ensure that cellphone users can take their numbers with them if they switch carriers sooner than 2007.

"I'm here today to tell you that Virgin Mobile isn't prepared to accept the CWTA announcement on number portability . . . the 2007 timeframe is too slow and completely unacceptable," he told a media conference in Toronto.

"This is an important issue that affects some 15 million mobile customers in Canada. They've been asking and waiting for number portability for years and it's time the mobile industry delivered."

Branson, whose Canadian subsidiary is competing aggressively with its bigger rivals in the cutthroat cellphone business, said he will send a letter to Prime Minister Paul Martin on the issue.

why am i not surprised.. EU before North America !

Euro airlines OK in-flight cell phone use

GENEVA, Switzerland (AP) -- Two European airlines will allow passengers late next year to use their own cell phones on commercial flights within western Europe, a Geneva-based technology firm said Tuesday.

TAP Air Portugal and British carrier bmi both have agreed to introduce OnAir's voice and text service for cell phones in separate three-month trial runs, Chief Executive George Cooper said.

The planes -- which will be the first to allow passengers to make and receive calls with their own cell phones while onboard -- will give OnAir the chance to assess its service ahead of its general release slated for 2007, he said.

"With both airlines, initially there will be a couple of airplanes -- two or three airplanes -- equipped with this system," Cooper told The Associated Press from Germany. "During that three months, we'll all be evaluating how it's going, what the usage is, how we handle the crew issues and so on."

OnAir's system will be used by TAP on its Airbus 321 model and by bmi on its Airbus 320s, both single-aisle planes primarily used for flights within western Europe.

Users of mobile phones and other handheld wireless devices with roaming capability will be able to make and receive calls using a base station within the airplane. They will be allowed to turn their phones on after the plane reaches 10,000 feet, when other electronic devices such as portable music players and laptops are permitted, Cooper said.

Mobile phones are banned on existing aircraft for fear that they might interfere with a plane's navigation system as they attempt to log on to terrestrial networks.

OnAir's mobile communications system is based within the plane, which it says ensures that cell phones and other devices operate at lower transmission power and thus avoid affecting avionics. The company hopes to clear all regulatory hurdles for air traffic within Europe at some point next year.

OnAir -- a joint venture of Airbus and Netherlands-based technology company SITA Information Networking Computing -- is aiming to sell its services to other airlines, which could then use the technology in other plane models.

Cooper said the surcharge for mobile phone use will be competitive with international roaming rates, at about $2.30-$2.50 per minute. A text message should cost about 50 cents to send or receive.

Airline bmi, a subsidiary of British Midland PLC, flies primarily to destinations in Britain and western Europe and is London Heathrow Airport's second-largest flight operator.

TAP, Portugal's state-owned airline, flies to 43 destinations in 25 countries.

Cooper made the announcement in conjunction with the annual World Airline Entertainment Association Conference, which opened Tuesday in Hamburg, Germany.

I'm with Roger's now and have been for the last 5 years and I've never had a problem with them. I've had a couple minor mishaps, but I figure that'll happen with any phone company. I'm happy with my contract, and their policies...and have in fact been on the same contract the entire time. I like how they give you upgrades on yoru phone as well, and the guarantees on their phones are usually pretty good.

I had vodafone since '99 or something, never had a single problem, every call and sms went through and no screwed up bills. I can call for local rates in all vodafone's networks in Europe, i never have to pay for incomming calls, my money/minutes never expired, coverage in every litle hicktown there is etc (oh yeah and i have been able to change operator without changing number since 2001 or something). Canada need to open up for competion, what you are doing now is simply insane! Defenetly one thing i don't miss about canada

Just another tid-bit about Roger's customer service...
So on my cell phone, it's been under my dad's name since I was about 18, b/c it was on his credit card. But for the past year or two it's been under my credit card, but his name. I wanted it to be under my name and we were under the impression that all I had to do was have him change it to my name on the account. Everytime we called someone gave us a different answer saying he had to call, or I had to call or we both had to. So last night I called about an ad I saw for long distance for students, and I figured that since my dad and I were both here, I'd inquire about changing my name.

So the guy helps me, and says he has to do a credit check just to make sure I'm good to go, even though it's on my credit card. Next thing I know he's telling me that the plan I was on expired in 2003, and they were just honouring it b/c I was already on it. Since it's under my name now I have to go on a new plan! The plan I had (150 daytime, unlimited weeknights/ends starting @ 7 and caller id) was $25 a month plus tax, and I've had that plan for like 3 years. It was perfect for me. If I wanted a plan like that...$50 bucks a month with tax! I was like WHAT THE HELL!! So I said, screw this, I want to go back under my father's name. This is ridiculus. I was told I couldn't do it b/c the contract was already terminated or something.

Finally I ended up getting to speak to a manager b/c this was just stupid. I was paying the bill and my name was on the account so I could change things under my dad's name. If I had known that this would have happened, I would have just stayed under my dad's name. So I spoke to a manager who was incredibly nice. She promised she would get me a deal that was either the same if not better. After some negotiations, she gave me a plan with 250 anytime, unlimited weekends/nights starting @ 6 and caller id for $25 a month plus tax. So she ended up giving me a better deal.

The other man that I spoke with was wrong in not telling me that I would have a major cost change if I switched to my name, but I know he wasn't trying to screw me over. The manager I talked to was very helpful and I was very satisfied with the deal.

So overall...cusomter service was great. A few little mishaps, but after everything got sorted out, I was once again a happy customer!

with most mobile providers, if u yell and bitch enuff they'll give into giving u a better plan due to the intense competition in the marketplace right now between the various carriers.

is that plan u got billed by the second ? juss curious ..

btw. most carriers offer phone hardware upgrades on a regular basis as long as ur on a monthly plan ..

Sorry...don't understand what you mean in that first sentence...are you talking about my old plan, the one they wanted to switch me too that was crazy expensive, or my new one?

And yea...I know most carriers do that. I heard though that telus usually doesn't do anything for customers that have been with them a long time. Is that still true?
