Unfortunately we are in a country that is very much divided between the english and the french. If any party wants to have true success they need a Quebec Connection at the high level. without it they are bound to be in the spot light....and not in a good way.

well the liberals have lost that connection now. I doubt they will get any seats in quebec after this corruption. I give credit to the french for at least they take action when they feel they have been wronged.

if she were truely serving her constituents then she would sit as an independent or resign and run as a liberal in a by-election or the next general election, whichever came first.

No, it's not good that the liberal in that riding is yesterday's news.

thats called backstabbing

quote:

No, it's not good that with her little experience, she's getting a shiny new cabinet post.

thats called being bought

quote:

By doing this, she has just made a statement that a conservative government would not suit Canada's interests right now.

by doing this and not going the other two routes i have mentioned she has made a statement that her personal interests come ahead of the constituents. It's no coincidence that she was suddenly awarded a high level cabinet post. She was bought plain and simple. There are three houses on the street next to mine with martha hall findlay election signs from last year on their lawns and they have a sash across it that says BELINDA BETRAYED US. I think there are a lot of Liberals here and across the country who have been fucked over by this as well.

Did she sign her Political Death Certificate? Not by a long shot.

I think she did but thats up to the voters.

quote:

It takes a lot of balls to pull a stunt like this, and I'm willing to bet the public will take notice.. Not in a negative (she's being bribed, backstabber, etc etc) way, but in a positive (she's representing her contituents even at great cost to her career, taking a stand against a party out for blood, etc etc) one.

im in aurora right now and ive spoken to my parents neighbours and already they are pissed off about this. The sentiment i get already is that voters here feel betrayed by this. No one here even really liked her last time around but couldnt stand to vote liberal. She was already on thin ice in Aurora.

quote:

If anything, I think this'll end up damaging the Tories a hell of a lot more than the Liberals. And frankly, Until they get new leadership and a *real* direction, I like it this way.

depends on who the better spinmaster is i guess

nice little piece of reading. and the 10th last paragraph about her constituents not wanting the tories to defeat the budget is also something.

I find this bit very interesting

quote:
In the midst of the negotiations, Stronach attended a campaign training session for Conservative candidates, where election strategy and the Tory platform were discussed.

As recently as Monday, Stronach told Tory colleague James Moore she was impressed by the quality of candidates and predicted at least two Liberal cabinet ministers could be knocked off in the election.

Clearly a conflict of interest here. She should be forced to step down just due to the fact that there is a conflict. Id venture to say that attending this conference while planning to walk was actually against the law. Not to mention that she intentionally decieved her party while gaining inside information.

It may be ethically wrong but I doubt there was much information obtained that the liberals or any other party doesn't already know. If a hockey player askes to be traded does that mean he should no longer attend games and practices as he may speak of strategies to other teams?

Stupid argument...just miss hockey

...count me in as one of those. The party called me a few days ago looking for donations for the potentially upcoming campaign. The answer they got? "Not as long as Harper is in control..."

Sadly, Belinda was the leading force for many of the old red tories still in the party. Now that she is gone, there's not much at all keeping the old guard around.

This is one of the big problems I have now with the Conservative Party. You are right when you say most people vote for the party, yet the new Conservative Party supports referendums, free votes in parliment on "moral" issues. You can't have it both ways.

This is not a good political move and definately not good for democracy in canada.

I heard an interview with her today on the news and she is in no way upset. Paul Martin owes her big time, but she is taking one for the team. Maybe if the Conservatives were more of a party you would see less problems when it came to internal issues.

And the reform the Conservative party supports giving the MP's much more power than they have now. This is a fundamental problem with their policies.

I wouldn't call her left wing, I think the term you are looking for is Red Tory, and yes I do think the Conservative Party lacks any true Red Tories (fiscally right wing, morally central). Despite everything that is coming out about the Liberals a Harper led Conservative Party will never form a majority government in Cananda, they would be hard pressed to form a minority government. Give me John Tory, Mike Harris and I'll happily vote for the Conservative party again - but not when the Reform/Conservative Alliance is in control of that party. Oh the good old days of Brian Mulronly.

Have you not been following the infighting and near implosion of the Liberals over the last few years?

Give me a break!!!
