is it just me, or are the "two-headed" running back tandem teams starting to become more of a familiarity in the nfl now ?
miami (brown and williams)
pittsburgh(parker and bettis)
cleveland (droughns and green)
tennessee (brown and henry)
denver(bell and anderson)
kansas city(holmes and johnson)
dallas ( jones and since they are having success without jones )
ny giants (barber and ward)
atlanta (dunn and duckett)
tampa bay (williams and pittman)
new orleans (smith and stecker)
st louis (jackson and faulk)
there are many teams that have the two headed running back combination, where they would rotate the two running backs, and at the end of the game, the two running backs would have 10+ carries .. this could be a growing trend in the nfl now ..
there were a few teams that had this a couple of years ago, with tampa bay (alstott and dunn), washington ( their cycle of running backs), and cleveland (green and insert name here).
i think this is a great idea for the nfl, because it increases the longeivity of the common running back. many running backs are getting wore down and prone to the evil ACL injury, because of the numerous hits they get, amount of carries and touches per game, and stuff ..
also, maybe it's just me, but i think we can all this the age of the running backs .. in the 80's to 90s, it was the quarterbacks (montana, elway, marino, favre, young, aikman) that were the cream of the crop. although marino didn't win a super bowl (sadly), all six quarterbacks promised big numbers and entertainment week in and week out. if we leave out emmitt smith and barry sanders, what other running backs were there back then ???
today's decade, we can't say it now, but in 3 to 4 years, we can say these group of running backs have set the two standards of what a running back should be :
holmes, faulk, tomlinson, barber, edge james (the pass catching running back that can go out in the open, and catch those 15 to 20 yard passes)
lewis, alexander, curtis martin, corey dillon, bettis (the bruising back that can promise 20+ carries and hard earned yards)
all these guys have been putting up gaudy numbers, and "somewhat" helped their teams to the light of success .. although this decade has been ruled by the belichick, brady, and pats dynasty (yes they are one .. ) , i cant overlook the direction many teams are going now . this can't promise success for teams, but like i said above, it is going to increase the number of years for the common running back.
also with this coming of age with two headed running backs, we may see teams actually going back to old school football, and run the football more .. i don't want to say 75% run, 25% pass schemes ... but more like 45% run, 65% pass .. i see more teams run the ball around 30 to 35 times a game now .. some teams running 200+ yards a game ... if they don't, then they either don't have a quality running back, or playing catch up ...
enough of my ranting ....
in other news, how about them g-men ... whooping up on the redskins .. woo! .. and what a sad day for the eagles .. i knew they were going to lose to the broncos, but i didn't know their defense was going to get slaughtered like that .. 2 100+ yard running backs ... plummer throwing 300+ yards ...
and the saints lose again ... .. geez .. this is usually the typical scenario for them .. look for them to have a strong novemeber and december, and sell themselves short to make the playoffs ...
and geez ! .. how bad is the afc east ?? they are practically giving the division away to the pats .. the jets, dolphins, and bills look awful right now .. well the dolphins can give the pats trouble with the brown/williams combination, because the pats run d doesn't look good right now .
