They are already practically squatting on that land save for a "shut them up" agreement the NDP made with them in the early 90s.

If they want peace and quiet of northern ontario, i suggest they move there. Same goes for the idiots that moved into the club district and now complain about the clubs there.

have some consistency in your position...you claim to be *so* in favour of individual rights, yet you're quite contemptuous where the Islanders are concerned. They have a CONTRACTUAL RIGHT to live there by way of their gov't lease and they have a Charter-protected right to equal protection under the law.

"practically squating..."

you're problem ought to be with the gov't who signed that lease and the zoning officials who allowed mixed residential/commerical zoning instead of simply keeping it commercial...leave the people enjoying their RIGHTS alone.

RJ makes a great point...why has the Docks not engaged their patrons? By virtue of the club being their livlihood, they seem to have a larger stake in whether or not they stay open than we do. So organize already!

Well I like the whole smoke free thing, and I smoke socially....you could smoke in clubs in Taipei and the whole smell of sweat and smoke on your clothes is rather disgusting and doesn't wash out easily. Plus smoking when you are dancing is like smoking when you are exercising...if someone wants a smoke bad enough they can go to the smoking rooms or go outside, if its that much of an inconvenience maybe you should consider other options besides smoking when you are out?
Clubs don't need to allow smoking to survive, but as for liquor licenses....well you do kind of need that if you want to run a nightclub here

oh my, if you are typical of the people employed by the docs, no wonder it is in trouble. I don't think the Islanders care if you spend 50 cents or a million bucks, they just don't want to hear music from your club at 4am. As far as how much tax money you pay, how many people you have working for ya, all of this is just excuses for why you feel you should be able to break the rules...poo on that.
Listen I have been to the docs on many occasions, I enjoy having it there, but in this arguement I am 100% on the side of the home owners, they were there first the noise guidlines are WELL established I don't know why you feel you should be able to break them.

this is not good enough for the islanders , they do not even want the small 8" 60 watt speakers playing on our patio , fact is they don't want us open anymore even though they actually aknowledge that things are much better.

The Guv doesn't get in crap because they are not so close and FYI , there are charges lined up for every club near the water once they have dealt with the docks , we are just the first.

The Hypocrasy of all this is that they want to use the law to force us out , yet they themselves refused legal procedings to evict them years ago , now they want the law on thier side
and many times have accused us of noise when we haven't even been open and the noise source has turned out to be a boat cruise or the Guv .

As Jayx has put it they live in a city , we offered to soundproof thier cottages but they want to sleep at night with the windows open

we employ 400 people pay millons in city taxes (more in 1 year then all the islanders put together would ever pay) and proveide indirect revenue to countless other suppliers and businesses.
Do they care that all these people will be out of work, do they care , hell no , they will only be happy when there are no boatcruises, no redpath sugar (yes they have complained about them to) , no Guv , no Island airport etc etc

so unless you know what you are taling about how about a nice cup of shut the fuck up

im quite consistant. Ive never had any tolerence for whiners like this. Ive always advocated that they move somewhere else if they dont like their neighbours and ive always believed in expropriation when necissary for public projects.

Without measures such as the one i suggest now, we wouldnt have any public space on toronto island at all.

Obviously the best solution would be a comprimise, but when there is no comprimise on their end then i take no pity on them.

anyways the residents have to understand that they live across the water from A CITY. Noise eminates from the city. Why did they never bitch and whine when the docks was actually a dock? Ive heard ships being loaded by cranes. Its a lot louder than a nightclub could ever be.

And its not just the docks. They whine about boats, factories, the airport etc etc. Give me a break! If you dont like it get the fuck out!
