1999 trance wins imo, but no way am I dissing '06 trance which is good too. I happily recall the days when Hooj and Additive put out great releases and Oaknefold was a well respected DJ. Also, it was a better time in the world when there were was no Iraq war, the economy was strong, and no 9/11 yet.

In 1999, the grass was also greener.

I'm a huge fan of `99 trance and huge fan of all the trance after including today + I'm interested to hear whats up and coming for the future.

Theres so many factors from what makes the tunes different between then and now. Things like audio technology, The Scene, Whats hot's hot and whats not (styles), the new drugs (experiment for the experience!!), locations of big events (Goa India, Ibiza Spain, etc) and the PEOPLE.

Personally i find trance took a dive coming into the 2000's but today, it catching on again. With new the sounds and audio techniques, it sometimes blows me away.

I still feel the TRANCE, closing my eyes and absorbin it. (yet there are some tracks that are serious CRAP and shouldn't even be considered trance music)

Too me....Trance was hot, then took a fall, and is gettin back up again. It never died. (I have a feelin its gonna make a major comeback)

Very good point! Actually that's why even Derrick May is more REAL trance for me than Armin etc. Detroit put me into trance. Hypnotic sounds, beautiful melodies and atmospheres, and the trance feeling.

I'm sure there are more great trance tracks or DJs out there than I know of, but I don't like sifting through garbage when the garbage or mediocre/cookie cutter stuff increases to such a large amount that it becomes too droning to have to sort through so much just to find the bit of quality.

5 years ago you didn't hear about every bedroom DJ/producer out there but nowadays you do on a regular basis including their radio show, latest news update, newest release etc. There are far too many of them trying to just jump on the bandwagon and follow someone else's formula in hopes of being successful as they were (ASOT phenomenon) rather than being experienced/talented enough to lead with breakthrough original work.

Now here lies the thing and I will try to explain this the best I can, these changes have been empowering and helpful in gaining exposure to these newb artists/djs. This is of course good in some ways. But funny enough, what's needed is to support and empower the great & well established DJs/producers works to a higher level as well so that their stuff remains to rise to the top and be able to be more noticed and doesn't get swamped into the sea of oversaturation. There needs to be that solid level of distinction there.. that higher level of recognition/hype/respect/exposure to the people at that level of talent & experience. It helps people to spot the great stuff easier, it helps give due respect/exposure to those who have worked to get themself to that level. And one key thing, to the up & comer it gives them something to work towards. Something to strive towards.

The whole DJ/producer/Artist worship has often been slagged, but the funny thing is.. it is 100% necessary. That hype is something that brings excitement to the scene.. helps create an aura of magic about things. Gives up & comers the dream of landing themself into such a position one day. Through the course of history it's always been proven that the world needs it's heroes.. even in cases where they hype far extends past the significance of the person and the fact that they are also a regular person doing many of the same regular things as other people.

Without the hype & excitement, the magic fades.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but would you guys say TA is more of a home to cynicism or excitement & hype these days?


Some have questioned the relevance of this thread, but it's bringing about some good discussion and awareness so that's a good thing. There are certainly enough people on this site to make some difference in things if enough people are on the same page and enough people want to make a difference or figure out how to tip the scale. Just like I said when mentioning how TA nearly landed Mikey into Mixmag top 100 DJs.
