I like movies that entertain me in some way. That might be with over-the-top action, by a script filled with witty dialogue, or through a cleverly crafted plot line that comes to a satisfying resolution, or some other variation or combination of those elements.
At the end of Requiem for a Dream, I just felt bad. I've loved some movies without happy endings (not many people would say they smiled @ the end of American Beauty), but there's some sense that the bad was balanced out in some way. In Requiem, it's just bad event 1, bad event 2, bad event 3, depressing sacrifice 4, and on and on...no hope, no laughter, no inspiration. It just beats you over the head with the tales of the very most pathetic (in the 'helpless' sense of the word) and unfortunate characters anyone could ever create. |
