Well if that's the case...then I guess it's not worth keeping the car (esp. if it's something like a pre-2000 sunfire) haha...I own a 2002 Sunfire (bought it new and now has 50K on it) and it's a crap car (very high maintenance) IMO.
But basically...Jeff has to look at the benefits (i.e. independence, convenience) and costs (insurance, gas, repairs)...and see which one outweights the other...
I guess my opinion comes from the experience of commuting from somewhere that involves double fare and long commutes using the transit system
