Some random information about martin roth

Synonymous with high quality productions, and his uplifting yet progressive sound, Martin Roth is a common name in the scene. Previously remembered for his Hard Trance productions under his YOMC alias, the times have changed and with an upcoming tour of Australia Martin discussed everything from Producing to his love for Australia.

Recently back from New York City, the interview kicks off with Martin discussing the tour. “It is a pleasure every time to play in the states as the people there like in a few other countries are so open minded to all kinds of electronic music and you can have a great night with them all together…” Having played in some of the biggest clubs in New York and Manhattan, Martin explains how proud he is to play in these venues as generally the clubs and people have differing tastes in music. But it seems over the past few years Martin Roth’s sound definitely has been diversifying and “growing up” as he puts it. As time grew he found the styles he played had become tiresome for him, “I returned first back to melodic trance music with a darker edge (but no Hard Trance better Tech Trance),” Martin continues, “And found in the last few months my love for Minimal-Electro.”

Reminiscing on days gone past, Martin explains how the shift in music in Germany is returning back to the sound that first sparked his love for electronic music. With Germany taking a leading role in music production in the region, Martin tells it how it is, “A lot of brilliant electro stuff is coming from here and a nice club culture based on that sound is coming back especially here to Frankfurt but also Munich and Berlin.” Some early details on Martin’s next single is the expectation of a blend of Electro and Early Trancey elements, “[its] Something really new you won’t expect, but there will still be the Martin Roth vibe on it.”

Many will remember Martin Roth for his Hard Trance alias, YOMC. A sound which he says doesn’t bring ass back to shaking, “As it has really become boring and dull…” Although his Dark/Tech Trancey alias, Technopunk is sure to continue as Martin is still very much driven by this sound. Producing so many songs and collaborating on countless projects, Martin did a complete cut and change as he became independent from labels and boundaries. But how was it that he decided to drop the YOMC alias and release his first single under his own name? After setting up his own label, he developed his own style, “The style I am happy with regardless what others are telling me and this went perfect.” With his highly successful single ‘Shockwaves,’ there was no going back for Mr Roth.

With no artist album yet, I asked the optimistic question, when? Martin starts off by saying “I am already in the last steps for my first artist album.” The album is set to contain his most well known remixes and also previously released singles, ‘Shockwaves’ and ‘The Orange Theme,’ but also new productions. Scheduled for a European Spring release, Martin admits the album may still take a few months to fully develop as his current schedule has kept him as busy as ever. On the topic of ‘The Orange Theme,’ Martin retells how he first met Frank Ellrich 4 years ago, his partner in the phenomenal remix. Better known under his Tracid Traxx alias ‘A.S.Y.S.,’ Frank was part of the same agency as Martin which led them to be introduced by their manager. Becoming close friends over the following months and with the two sharing the same musical background in their “Early days,” the two set about remixing a 90’s classic, ‘The Orange Theme’ was their final choice. Produced by their heroes of electronic music, Cygnus X, the boys also had a lot of early releases on Sven Vaeth’s former labels, “Eye Q” and “Harthouse.” With them from the local area (Frankfurt), the two set about their remixes after “Getting the official permission and support by the guys. They were really kind, liked what we did a lot and so the story continued.”

With some well known collaborative projects in the past Martin hasn’t had any recently, “I went more and more into producing for myself under my name but that doesn’t mean I am no more interested in collaborations.” He explains how any future collaborations would be “One time specials,” currently we can expect a new song co-produced with Marc Van Linden to be released around March. Also asking who he would like to collaborate with in the future Martin names Lange, Santiago Nino and a few US Talents as “Top of the lists.”

Moving the topic onto his upcoming tour of Australia, Martin discusses his previous Interview night. “My memories of the last “interview” party were so intense” he begins, “It was a small party, a small venue as it is still not easy for the Melbourne real Trance / Electro scene but the place was so packed, everyone was freaking out and they gave me the feeling being a part of their amazing party. I loved it from the beginning till the end and this is why I am not only looking forward to come back to Aussie but also playing especially there.” Also noting how he looks forward to Perth where he says “The people are also so lovely and nice and I had the best experiences with Rise.” On the topic of Australia it sounds difficult for Martin to put his love for Australia into words, “Australia is my second home.” First falling in love with the country 5 five years ago after 10 seconds, Martin has returned 5 times since. With a growing love for the nation he notes the special friendships he has made and adds that “Playing in Melbourne is like playing in your living room.”

Comparing Australia to the rest of the world has Martin humbly connects the Australian vibe to that of the experiences he’s had in Central America. A nice development for Mr Roth has been the growing Electro and Trance sound in Australia, which “Makes me look forward even more to the future,” as he admits that the past had been rather more shaped by harder sounds. With some of his biggest highlights being his March Interview appearance and his experiences at the clubs and festivals of Sydney and Perth, Martin adds that he has indeed had plans on moving to Australia. He had also hopped on doing his producing here and also teaching at SAE in Melbourne, Sydney or Byron Bay, but unfortunately due to his hectic schedule time hasn’t allowed this to happen, “The plans are still there.”

So for those who haven’t heard the Martin Roth sound but are considering attending a night with the Roth, he affirms that he is open minded to many different forms of electronic music, the crowd is also hoped to share that open view. Depending on several factors Martin describes how “Generally you can expect a journey from Minimal Electro through (Progressive) Uplifting-Trance ending with Technoish Tech-Trance.” Martin teasingly adds, “If you are expecting Hard Trance or Hardstyle you’d stay away from this party.” Many DJs have differing views on what is the main role of the DJ, “To me the right choice of records to the crowd at the right time and vibe. Plus a kind of presence on stage, being charming and showing the people that you are enjoying the music same as they are doing.”

With a new year, everyone has their own hopes and goals. Martin’s are hopes for as catchy and successful release with his new single as he had with ‘Shockwaves,’ and aiming to show people his uniqueness through his facet’s on his new album, whilst also “having a few more releases on Lunatique, also from other new talents and still going my Martin Roth way.”
