If yes, to interfere in their duties, as wrong as it may seem at the time, is to ask for trouble. (and you're stuck with obstruction of justice or something like that)

If not, fucking bootfuck those shitpumps.

i don't know about ucla, but our campus police has the full authority over campus. firearms, authority to shoot in extreme cases, etc.

a guy was a dumbfuck, asking for trouble. was tasering over the line? absolutely. but if i were that sergeant, i would be fucking freaked by that voice, that is some screaming. "geeeet yourrrr haaaaandssss offff off meeee. freeeeeeeeeeeedoooooooom". is he from linkin park? those are the guys who have a very strict code of conduct, and at the end of the day, everyone should be thankful to them that they don't just sit on their asses but are actually making sure the fucking campus is secure. sometimes it means "false positives" like this one.

it is nice of you to sit by the keyboard and say "fuck the police". the reality is, when people know they are not right, they comply with the figure of authority (otherwise, i'm sorry, my friends, but those who don't are stupid fucks).

the bottom line is, you can be all smart-talking students at a liberal university and shit, but at the end the one with the gun with a legal authority to use it is the one who is really in control of the situation. i'm sorry for mohamed, but this will be a good lesson for him to comply in the first place in the future.

oh really??? well, princess, why don't you move to ghetto projects then? there is hardly any police coming by there... you'll then be happily living in complete harmony with your neighbors with no "pigs" to restrain your civil rights.

It is the imbalance of enforceable order which has lead to the very creation of ghettos neighbourhoods in the first place. Police are just an extension of that.

How was a man in a library refusing to show his ID "asking for it?".

Let's think of this...

If Joe Smith, Mr. blonde-haired, blue-eyed California beach jock had forgotten his ID, not been able to present it, then wanted to leave the library (for whatever reason), would we be hearing about this?

Dude fact is the kid did not comply with the rules. No he should not of been tasserd that many times but he should of left and got his ID (like everyone else) and that would of been that.

Which is exactly why the police shouldn't protect officers who behave above their authority, since their actions reflect badly on all people in their position. It's the same reason I think the rapist/murderers in Iraq should get executed, as permitted by US law. It would set an example that this isn't tolerated, but instead they defend them and look for every possible way to condone their actions, which in the end is a PR disaster for the police.

You sound like an anarchist. Police is an absolute necessity to keep at least some degree of order. Civilization in itself is an imbalanced restrictions of freedoms. This is the reality of life. The only people who were truly equal and free were the cavemen - before one of them figured out to use stones to become a figure of power.

This is called "real life", actually, and you can read utopian books and have utopian dreams all you want, but as soon as you understand that this world is veeery far from being fair, the better off you will be.

Absolutely you're right. Unfortunately, "some people are more equal than the others", and if it was Joe Smith, no incident would occur. That proves even more that Mr. Mohamed is quite stupid. He knows that in a current geopolitical situation and tensions, and him belonging to a certain ethnic group, his resistance of legal authority is not a very smart thing to do.

Were cops wrong? Yes, they were... They were completely over the line. Would it have happened if the guy was smart enough to just say "yes, you're right, I don't have the ID, and I will just leave now"? I don't think so.

It is quite difficult to judge this situation without knowing all the facts, but the whole thing could be completely avoided if BOTH (and not just one) sides were prudent about it.

a few points:

-- the kid didn't have his ucla ID on him and was headed out of the building when approached [i mean, why even bother when someone's leaving?] i forget my ID all the time, as do a lot of students. this sort of thing usually gets resolved with a two-second explanation ("i forgot it dude") but apparently the guard was having none of it.

-- ucla guards are a sub-branch of the lapd [it's a public school] and are no ordinary schmoes. [being a public institution, ucla is also supposed to be more flexible than a private school when it comes to people walking around its campus].

-- even a single taser shot is excessive in this non-physical situation, but continuing to taser the dude when he's cuffed and getting dragged around like a rag doll is criminal and disgusting.

-- most cops do a great job for low pay and under awful conditions. knee-jerk critics need to realize this (as they will when they need a cop someday). reflexive cop defenders need to realize there are a lot more scumbag cops out there than they care to acknowledge.

(my campus has had id-related troubles recently too. guards got physical with a student who wouldn't show his id (on a street adjacent to campus) when asked. kid was black. cops say they were following procedure, but it's fishy when you consider that (a) almost no one ever gets asked for id (b) two days later there was a repeat with another black student)

DE OPRESSO LIBER! To liberate the oppressed! How can someone just stand there and watch a helpless person get fucked over like that.

I'd take a bullet for a decent person, that's why I'm joining the military.
