134-pound burger is savored in Southgate; then it's sold and eaten
BY DAN CORTEZ • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • February 24, 2008
Saturday was probably the first time the line at the back of Mallie's Sports Grill & Bar in Southgate wasn't for the restrooms.

Dozens of customers -- some with a cell phone in each hand ready to take a picture -- jockeyed for position just outside the entrance to the kitchen.
They wanted to get the first glimpse at a 134-pound hamburger that could break the Guinness world record for the largest commercially available hamburger.
"Whoa, that's a big burger," said Marvetta Howard, 51, of Detroit, who had a seat near the kitchen. "I'm impressed. You don't often see a Guinness record broken, so I'll be buying a copy of the book when it comes out."
The previous record was 123 pounds.
When the final weight was announced, chef Arthur Laramie wiped his brow and cracked a small smile.
"I've been cooking all night long," Laramie said as the monster hamburger made its way to the front of the restaurant on a silver cart. "I just hope they don't drop it."
An overflow crowd was entertained throughout an afternoon of waiting with a raffle, giveaways and plenty of sports on the flat-screen televisions in both dining rooms. The windows of the doors leading to the kitchen were covered to protect against wannabe paparazzi.
Ed McDonald, 51, was at Mallie's for the first time Saturday and was impressed with the wings.
"I'm having a lot of fun with this talk of the record," said McDonald of Detroit. "And the food is good."
Romeo Mallie, who helps manage the restaurant for his son, owner Stephen Mallie, said great food has always been a priority.
"He always wanted to be in the restaurant business," Romeo Mallie said. "This is a new experience with us and we're having a ball."
Mallie's already serves 6- and 12-pound hamburgers. After the 134-pounder was officially weighed, it was sold to customers who were awaiting the charbroiled-treat.
Howard, who goes to Mallie's every Sunday with a group of friends, arrived about 1 p.m. Saturday to snag a good seat. She said just like any other food fan, she wanted to see a hamburger that would become a record holder.
"We as a culture have a fascination with oversized stuff," she said. "If you make it big, we'll buy it."
That's good news for Mallie's. It plans to add the burger to the menu for $350. The price includes fries and pop.

Seriously... I'm not even sure if you could BBQ it. That would be a task in itself.
