I don't find that to be a particularly credible analogy, seeing as it doesn't represent the actual point being made here.

No one is saying that Ableton doesn't make matters more convenient, and that convenience is one of its advantages. But if the extent of your application of it is oriented towards convenience, then why use something with enormous potential to such a narrow extent?

In that respect, the analogy is more accurately depicted as buying a Porsche solely as a commuter car. You may use your Porsche to get to work, but I seriously doubt anyone buys one primarily with that intent in mind.

That said, I'm not necessarily agreeing with and advancing this argument. I'm sure Sasha didn't invest all his time and energy with Ableton just to save him the trouble of traveling with records, and I would be inclined to believe that his typical Ableton performance amounts to a more interesting listen than he would otherwise be doing with vinyl and CDJ's. Nevertheless, I don't see why so many people on this thread are wrestling with coming to terms with this argument.

Who exactly did I give crap to in this thread besides your dumbass? I didn't call anyone an idiot or tell anyone to fuck off because I didn't agree with them. I stated what I think and explained why, hoping some people would actually read it and see where I'm coming from, being the long-time Sasha fan I am.

We're discussing differences of opinion. We're talking about shit. Trading ideas. It's KIND OF the point of a forum. Not just sitting around going

That kind of shit is reserved for Googooly. It's pretty fucking easy to sit there and talk shit about people without anything substantiative. I know, I've been guilty of it the same, but at least I can recognize that it adds absolutely nothing of value to the forum, and I try NOT to do that. And I love how as soon as someone has strong opinions on here or actually takes the time to really research something they're a "snob". It's like "don't act like you know too much...smart people are SNOBS!". As if we're supposed to tiptoe around and yield to anyone else's opinion no matter how backwards it may seem.

At least Paradox Lost has some kind of patience to read and see things from a different perspective, regardless of whether or not he agrees.

Well, this interview here is Sasha showing off his software and kit, and he certainly seems to enjoy using it. Maybe it's kind of geeky, but you have to see how snobbish it is to say the guy's a knob just because he doesn't push it to the limit every so often.

So you see, the only problem I have with this argument is that it's very snobbish, and almost saddening in that these people (or at least Clovis) apparently have nothing better to talk about than slagging off on a guy who's just glad to have a more convenient way of doing things.

I mean, I can see how is might seem funny to go to all the trouble of learning a new way of doing things, and getting a controller made, but obviously there was some kind of payoff, so I can't see anything to criticize.

Ugh...I'm sorry that I actually enjoy it when people put effort into things. The surprises and magic happen when Sasha is pushing himself. When he's exploring and taking chances. Thats the Sasha I love. In absence of that effort ( and I'm not just talking about ableton, his music selection too), his sets do not interest me. Is that such a horrible crime? That I like it when he's pushing the limit and am rather bored by him taking the easy way out?

Either way, as I said before, I'll always respect the guy.

Difficult to deal with people who have strong opinions that aren't your own, huh guys?

Seriously though - being paired with Clovis is about one of the highest compliments someone could ever pay to me. Thank you.

whoa, way to act civilized, guys.

Holy ducking Jack, is it really necessary to get 5 pages of heated debate in a stupid Sasha interview thread?

The way I see it is (and I don't know much about Ableton at all) that if it really has all these possibilities and whatever and Sasha just sucks at it or just got lazy, what the hell are you guys going to do about it?
Move on to the next best thing. Let's all hope for Clovis's sake he makes a come back and what not. Other than that there is nothing you can do. Weather Sasha thinks it's just more efficient and easy and he's making his "hard earned" money that way that's his problem and the club promoters'. I'd also feel cheated if I payed to see a DJ and all he did was pull off a Peter Hook, other people in the other hand just don't give a damn as long as "the set is good"; but wtf are we gonna go do about it other than cry upon the glory days of DJ Sasha. This discussion isn't leading to anywhere and I'm beginning to worry what good does a forum do to any of us rather than make us seem like idiots in front of a screen and boost out ego's (or hurt them if your that much of loser). Just stop paying to see Sasha if it's THAT disappointing to you. I've never seen Sasha live, his recent sets seem OK to me, his sets from 3 - 2 years ago seem brilliant to me, but I'm not going into the booth and saying "Play some fucking music and use that Maven like your life depended on it". Sorry for the rant, just my 2 cents..

Well I have to say, I really don't think our little debate was as bad as some might think. I think the problem is that all of us who participated in this minor scuffle made some decent points but the bottom line is, we were all essentially talking as if we know what Sasha is thinking and what his motives are. We don't and therein lies the problem and why this debate could have gone on for a million more pages without anyone agreeing.

Man, we are really not on the same page. Point still missed entirely. Anyways I retire from this thread.

I wouldn't say I was being snobbish when I made the point, or even necessarily "slagging off" Sasha. My point was that Sasha is a high-profile "Ableton DJ" to re-use the phrase, evidenced pertinantly in the fact that Ableton comes up in almost every single interview with him.

My point was how disproportionate the whole Sasha-Ableton association is. If he wanted to cut out carrying records, he could use any virtual DJ program. Hell, he could use the free one Beatport gave away recently. He didn't have to use Ableton, he certainly didn't have to have a custom controller designed for it and most certainly of all there's no need for Ableton to come up in every fucking Sasha interview, simply because it's barely even noticable that he's using it.

well if hes going to use a dj program he might as well use the best one out there. im sure he still likes having the possibility of pushing it to the limit even if he doesn't do it very often. and while I agree about it being mentioned in way too many interviews, that's more the interviewers' fault than sasha's.
