^yeah creamfields was a breath of "fresh" air during all the poppy crap he was releasing around then/now. by fresh i mean more back to the "old school" oakey that a lot of us on here came to love. notice there are some older tracks in there and some other great ones.

Heck Yeah. I forget which track it is but there's one in there that is totally classic from some time ago. I want to say it was from an old Thomas Michael mixtape that I recognize it. I'll check it on my lunch break.

One reason why I really enjoyed this discussion is because when oakey is on and not being mainstream he quite possibly has the best track selections and mixes of any trance dj around. I can't help but make that face...you know the face I'm talking about...the 'this is so sick I can't help but make this face" face. LOL! I have limited exposure to Armin who seems to be extremely popular but nothing I've heard from him has really done it for me. For the most part feels cookie cutter to me. If anyone can recommend something REALLY good by him I'd be open.

"the auranaut - people want to be needed" maybe?

in regards to your armin question, the only real cd of his i've ever enjoyed was the live at ibiza 2004 cd... i think it's called universal religion 2004.

Good show! Yup. Aranaut. That track is from '96! How sick is that to throw a track from '96 near the end of the 2nd disc of a mix 8 years later and have it sound like it's a totally new track. Gotta love it.

I agree about bullet in the gun. I don't know what the deal is with that track.

yeah i never used to appreciate "bullet in the gun" but the saturday mix played in this EM has some good build and vibe to it... i like it when it breaks down and then that certain noise kicks in (i don't know the technical terms for them) that sweeps from left to right and then the chick starts signing "ahhh ahhh ahhhhhh" again... it keep the crowd dancing and pumped up. but overall i could do without BITG (again, it works nice in this EM though).

oh, and PWTBN is from 95 so that even adds to your point. he also kind of pays homage to Li Kwan with the newer version of Point Zero on that 2xCD as well... that's from back in 94 (the original) that he used to spin...

yeah I haven't gone too deep into looking at the tracks. I knew there were some other good oldies in there just listening to it.

It just shows how much oakey can be the man when he wants to be. If we could just get him to stop trying to be a rock star! Anyone know of other mixes by him done since 2000 that are good? How's his live stuff these days?

Just got round to downloading this and I'm playing it now. This is the shit. I always thought late-90s Oakenfold was anthemic schlock like Tranceport, but this is awesome. Did Oakey ever capture this sound on any of his mix compilations?

I haven't listened to this one yet but I always thought his global underground Oslo and New York mixes were amazing. They were before Tranceport which I liked at the time but was nothing special.

I haven't heard Oslo in a long time in fact. There's a couple tracks on there I totally miss. And both of those he has amazing sometimes 3 or 4 track intros before he even gets into the trance. Ranging from sort of beatless dreamy (not really ambient) stuff to even jungle and one track that's not really jungle but has such an awesome beat and mood to it. Just awesome.

no not really since none of his compilations were live. if you want more "anthemic schlock" check out the gatecrasher essential mix from the same world tour... sick.
